“UNDERHAND WORK ?"

OPEN-AIR CLASSROOM FOR AVONDALE DEPARTMENT BANS TYPE *1 think there are outside influences at work. . . I think that there has been some underhand work. . . . We should not accept this dictation. . . These views were indignantly expressed by members of the Auckland Education Board today when they declined to permit the board to provide the additional cost from its rebuilding fund for the erection of an open-air classroom at Avondale South. A plan of the Linwood Avenue. Christchurch, open-air classroom was forwarded by the department, who asked the board to proceed with the room, on these lines. “I don’t know why the department is adopting this attitude,” declared the chairman, Mr. A. Burns. “Evidently the board has no voice on the subject and we will have to erect the classroom according to the department’s instructions.” Mr. H. S. W. King: We should protest against the department’s attitude of we are to retain our independence as the board and its architect arc placed in a very invidious position. The Chairman: I think there are outside influences at work. “If the department is to dictate what we do with the rebuilding fund, what becomes of the board’s individuality?” asked Mr. H. S. W. King. “The erection of buildings is clearly the function of the department.” “I feel there is some underhand work going on,” declared Mr. J. Primrose. The chairman said that the classroom in Christchurch might be suitable for that city, but the different climate in Auckland might make some improvement necessary.

The subject was deferred pending tho architect’s visit to investigate the Christchurch school.
