TE AROHA NOTES
The Waihou and Cambridge polo teams will play at Herriesviile on Wednesday next for the Cameron Cup. Both teams are in especially good form and a very interesting contest should eventuate » # * Mr. Letli Lincoln, proprietor of theatres in the Bronx section of New York City, accompanied by Mr. Val Rogers, visited Te Aroha on Saturday. While here the former gave some interesting ideas on the future of both sound and talking pictures. He said that when he left America there was a definite voice by the public for less dialogue in pictures, and, in fact, the feeling for and against was about 50-50. There was a reaction of the public toward the silent film. He was confident that there would always be a profit in the silent picture theatres. After all, he said, the rise and fall of the talking picture would be governed by the standard of the entertainment offered the audiences. The new dramatic technique would probably be introduced -by producers, whose only standard was perfection. The fact remained, however, that there was no definite dislike on the part of the public to the silent picture with synchronised musical effect. The silent picture, which was temporarily overlooked in the rush, was now coming back into public favour. * * * The balance sheet of the Te Aroha Borough Council has this year been tagged. The town clerk, in explanation, states that a portion of outstanding rentals I includes sums owing for the past 20 years, and not written off; that consequent upon £3,800 having in recent ! years been paid off the loan moneys, | no depreciation was allowed, and that i the remission of rates was mad© on I unoccupied shops and according to the j council’s interpretation of th© Rating I
