CHINCHILLA PELTS
GROWERS ALLEGE MISLEADING PROPAGANDA PROPOSAL TO MINISTER Annoyance was expressed by members of the Auckland Fur Club last evening at the repeated announcements detrimental to the rabbit Industry, by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. G. W. Forbes. The present complaint had reference to the prices of Chinchilla pelts at a recent British auction, when 40,000 pelts were offered. , It was said that the report came from the High Commissioner in London. Members expressed the opinion that the so-called first-grade pelts of the auction were probably of a nondescript quality, little better than common rabbit skins. It was believed that the market value of chinchilla pelts was deliberately misrepresented by hostile interests, using the Government’s services in order to destroy the valuable rabbit industry in New Zealand. It was decided to ask the Minister to reveal in all future reports from the High Commissioner the name of the mercantile firms supplying the details.
