STONEMASON LOOKS FOR BUSINESS CEMETERY CANVASSING When Alfred W. Sakey, a monumental mason, was charged in the Onehunga Police Court yesterday with Sunday trading. Sergeant D. J. O’Neill told the bench that the police had received numerous complaints recently of mourners being molested on Sundays at the Hillsborough Cemetery by stonemasons canvassing for orders. After several failures to detect the offenders, Sakey was caught bargaining with two mourners on Sunday. December 29. He had a monument yard near the cemetary apd was heard discussing a proposal to provide concrete blocks for a grave. The sergeant said Sakey had been previously warned and that the practice was becoming too common. Mr. Schramm, for the defendant, admitted his client had sold two flower pots and contended that the Act was unreasonable and would be amended if brought under the notice of the legislature. “While the Act is there,” said the magistrate. Mr. W. H. Woodward, “it must be enforced. Defendant is fined £ 1 and costs.”
