PROMISING HACK

WAS AN UNLUCKY ONE ON TOP MAY CHANGE HANDS Probably the most promising hack seen out at Thames last week, and certainly the unluckiest, was On Top. He has yet to win a race, and when he does —it will be very soon—it will be in new ownership. For On Top is among the horses to be put under the hammer at Messrs. Paterson's dispersal sale at Takapuna on January 31. In addition to On Top the speedy Pellette will be offered, as well as Section, Full Measure, Land Measure, and many other horses it* training, in addition to brood mares, etc. The Thames gathering was indeed an unlucky one for Air. John Paterson, for instead of winning two races, fourth and a third was all that rewarded him. On Top was the horsq concerned. Must Have Won In the hack sprint the first day O* Top was apparently having an argument with his rider nearly three fur* longs from home, when he was three lengths clear of the field. This lighting allowed Welcome Boy to run up to hirr* and on the outside. On Top ran right over to the outside fence on the homo bend, and away went Welcome Boy with him. This let the speedy Cruachan up on the inner and lie walked home. But Cruachan would not have won had On Top kept going straight. Had his rider, even after running off the course, kept On Top at it, instead of checking him, he would have been second, instead of fourth. There is little doubt also that he would have won had he not displayed such waywardness. That On Top should run green was not unexpected, for on Thursday he was only having his second run in public, an outing at Takapuna In the late spring being his first. Has Tons of Speed On Saturday he was made favourite in a similar race as on the opening day, but ho was at good odds. The course was heavy, and On Top had all the worst of the running. Turning for home lie was about five horses out from the rails, and on this occasion showed no inclination whatever to hang out on the bench Indeed, he finished up the home stretch as straight as a gun barrel.

Big Bertha, too, went with him, and while the former won, On Top. despite his dashing effort over the last bit, ivas relegated to third place, a length and half a head behind Big Bertha and Valstreet. With any luck at all he should have nearly won. and in any case his owner was unlucky in not collecting second dividend. A Strong One On Top is onjy a tliree-year-old. by that good horse Surveyor, from Te Moti, by Alotiti from Anadyomene, by Dreadnought from Aphrodite, by Apremont from Watersprite. He is a halfbrother to Bustler, a pretty fair sort of a jumper before his career was fatally ended on the turf by a fall. This three-year-old is solidly built, and appears as if he w ill carry weight well. Pie is exceedingly fast—his Thames showings left no room for doubt upon that point—and such a strong galloper promises to do well this season. There should be keen competition for On Top when he comes under the hammer on January 31. It is a wonderful chance to secure a ready-mr.de galloper, and he is still a maiden.
