PUBLICAN DEFRAUDED
GAOL FOR FARM SEEKER NOT A HEAVY DRINKER From Our Own Correspondent MORRINSVILLE, Today. In the Morrinsville Police Court today Robert Charles Dixon was sentenced to three months’ hard labour on a charge of obtaining credit for £4 8s 6d by fraud from the licensee of the Morrinsville Hotel. The licensee of the hotel, Charles Adams, said Dixon stayed at the hotel at various times during November and December, stating he had Just sold a farm at Whangarei, and was looking for another at Morrinsville. Later he said he had bought a well-known farm, and was given board and cash. He left, and later telephoned the licensee, saying he would call and pay his account. Dixon asked for leniency, and said he was under the influence of drink when he made the statements, and said drink was his failing. The licensee denied this, and said the man was not a heavy drinker. In sentencing accused, the bench said that in view of the list of previous convictions, leniency could not be extended.
