SATURDAY’S ROWING

CREWS OUT FROM FIVE CLUBS NOT MANY ENTRANTS Crews from the five rowing clubs were on the water on Saturday afternoon in spite of the unfavourable weather. Water conditions were excellent. but there wore only poor fields. Waitemata and North Shore could only muster three crews for trial fours, St. George’s had four, and West End had 12 competitors in handicap sculling races. Auckland’s event was won by default. This was the first series of trial races held for about a month, two regattas being held during the holiday season. NORTH SHORE EVENTS The North Shore Rowing Club held it trial fours for the Schmidt Trophies. Tho course was from the Iris to the pavilion. The water was calm after the rain. The crews were:—Norris, Eaton. Walsh and Willetts: McCollum. C. Oliver. Vowels and Oliver: Davis. Townsend. Carlyle and Eagles. First Heat. —Norris and McCallum rowed at flood tide in easy water. MeCaJlum established a lead almost at the start, and passing Devonport wharf, had a lead of nearly a length. Rowing with a swinging stroke, the crew increased the lead to two lengths at the finish, despite a hard effort by Norris to decrease it. Final. —McCallum beat Davies by three lengths. Davies took the lead from the start and rowing strongly, held his position until the Devonport wharf was passed. Opposite “Ventnor” McCallum put in a great burst of speed and forged ahead. He finished three lengths ahead of Davies. WEST END CLUB SCULLING FOR TAYLOR TROPHY Excellent water conditions and a flood tide made up for unfavourable weather when the West End Rowing Club held a set of handicap sculling races for a trophy donated by Mr. E. M. Taylor, club secretary. There were 12 entrants and the short course to the club-house was used. Mr. Taylor was judge, and Mr. F. Bryan starter. Some delay was caused by the laxity of certain members in taking the water for the races up to time. Considerable amusement and some little excitement was created at the sheds when D. Stotter. well known as a University Rugby player, fell out of his single sculling stump during a race in whfch he was not a competitor. Stotter stuck to his upturned boat and was rescued by two youths in a dinghy. First Heat.—G. Conway (2sec) beat A. Dalton (lOsec) without any difficulty. Dalton did not finish. Second Heat.—J. Haylock (2sec) beat O. Felton (4sec) on a foul. Felton had difficulty with his steering. Third Heat. —A. C. Norden (scr), beat V. MacFarlane (4sec), on a foul._ This was a good race, until within 25 yards of the finish MacFarlane turned abruptly inshore and a collision resulted. Fourth Heat.—F. Conway (scr) beat M. Conway (6sec) by two lengths. Fifth Heat.—R. Witton (9sec) beat F. Bryan (14sec) by one and a-half 16 Sixth Heat.—F. Baker (4sec) beat R. Woods id © (4sec) bv two feet. Semi-finals.—J. Haylock beat G. Conway bv three-quarters of a length. A. C. Norden beat F. Conway by two lengths. R. Witten beat R. Woodside by six lengths. Three men were then left in and Witten drew a bye. Second Semi-final. —After a great race, which was won only in the last ha fdozen strokes, Norden beat Haylock by half a length. Final.—Norden beat Witten by a length. Witten, a first-year boy, stuck to it gamely but lost ground by erratic steering, and Norden’s experience won the race for him. AUCKLAND CLUB KOHN CHALLENGE CUP Only one crew turned out to contest the Kohn Challenge Cup donated for competition between crews representing the Auckland Rowing Club. The trophy was accordingly won by default by the only crew entering, consisting of R. Stacey. J. McComish, J. Geodsir and A. Irvin. WAITEMATA CLUB MASON CUP AND TROPHIES Braving intermittent showers of rain, three crews from the Waitemata Club rowed for the Mason Cup and trophies. The long course from Orakei Gap to the Akarana sheds was used and water conditions were perfect. Owing to the insufficient number of crews the race was decided in one event.

The crews were:—R. G. Barker, C. P. Belton, M. N. Pierce,' P. Usher; W. H. Eaddy, N. Hunt, G. J. Horning, L. J. Ellison; C. G. Fearon, E. U. Bishop, E. Howard, F. C. Conway. Fearon got away early, at the start followed by Eaddy and Barker in that order. At the half-mile Fearon’s bow came off his seat and allowed Eaddy aiid Barker to come up level for a short distance. Then Fearon began to draw away again. Eaddy came again and the two raced even for a quarter of a mile. On entering the straight Eaddy began to draw away steadily and won comfortably with two lengths to spare. Barker was a length and a-half away third. Mr. C. C. Cairns was the judge. FOURS FOR TROPHY ST. GEORGE’S CLUB RACES In spite of heavy rain ideal water conditions prevailed at the St. George’s Rowing Club’s four-oar races, at Point Resolution. Four crews competed and great enthusiasm was shown in all events, which were for the Rejnolds trophy. Starting was by mutual consent, and the judge was Mr. W. J. H. Reynolds, who presented the trophies. The crews were:—F. Solomon, T. Lambert, C. Kelleway, G. Biss; \V. Bright, F. Colebrook, I. Duncan, E. Auger; G. Fogarty, D. Dunn, J. Biss; S. Hislop, C. D’Authreau. J. Cooke, E. Fort, G. Biss. Results were as follow: First Heat. —F. Solomon beat W. Bright. This was a closely contested race, Solomon winning by three-quar-ters of a length. Second Heat. —G. Fogarty beat D’Authreau. This was a fine race. Fogarty leading all the way by half a length. Final. —F. Solomon beat G. Fogarty by a length.
