FOUGHT A POLICEMAN
BELLIGERENT DRUNKARD REFUSED TO GO HOME From Our Own Correspondent WAIHI, Today. Failing to take advantage of two warnings from Constable A. K. Rimmer to go home, late on Saturday afternoon, John Pattello, S2, returned with a request to be locked up. When the constable again told him not to be silly and to get away home he became belligerent and attempted to strike the officer. A scuffle ensued and as a sequel Pattello appeared before Messrs. E. Morgan and R. O. lx Lighthbourne. J.P.’s in the Waihi Police Court this morning, charged with having used obscene language, being disorderly while drunk, and assaulting the police. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant TX L. Calwell described the affair and said that considerable difficulty was experienced in effecting the arrest, and even after being lodged in tho cells accused carried on in such a manner that he had to be restrained by force. Constable Rimmer had suffered injuries that had necessitated medical attention. Pattello had been convicted in 1925 of assault, fighting and drunkenness, but bad not been before the court since. After emphasising the seriousness of tlie offence, the Bench fined accused £1 for using bad language, and £5, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, for assaulting the police. On the other charge he was convicted and discharged. He was allowed one month in which to pay, and was also ordered to pay 10s 6d medical expenses.
