SOUTHERN FRIESIANS
MR. ROYDS’S FINE HERD Recent articles and photos published in this section on the general utility points of the Friesiatr as a profitable dairy cow have drawn comment from as far South as Canterbury, where the breed is even more popular than in the North. The Sun recently published the photo of a fine type of Friesian cow. This has drawn from a correspondent in Canterbury the contention that that province can also produce Friesians with high butter-fat records. The champion Friesian at the last Canterbury show, it is pointed out, has a c.o.r. test of 7111 b of butter-fat. The reserve champion at the show (owned by Mr. J. I. Royds) at the present time is giving 701 b of milk daily, with a test of 4.4; as this works out at approximately 281 b of butter weekly on a twlce-a-day milking, it can be seen that the name of the Friesian is being well upheld in the South. It indicates also that judges a.t Southern shows are not awarding places to cattle merely on the grounds that they have a good milking appearance. It is worth mentioning, in passing, that Mr. Royds has built up one of the finest herds of Friesians in the Dominion.
