RUNNING A HOME

LITTLE THINGS WELL WORTH KNOWING To prevent the back buttonhole in little boj-s’ trousers from tearing out, or the buttons on the underbody from breaking off, sew a double piece of elastic an inch long to the underbody and sew the button to the end of the elastic. To cool a jelly quickly, place the mould containing it in a bowl of cold water to which a handful each of salt and soda have been added. A bathtub soap holder, fastened over the kitchen sink, is a convenience for holding the vegetable and scrubbing brushes. You can clean windows and pictures rapidly by rubbing them with a clean rag sprinkled with turpentine or petrol. If the windows are very dirty wash with cold water first, then rub with the petrol or turpentine. To whiten a kitchen table, add a few drops of ammonia to the hot water used for scrubbing the table in the ordinary way. This will prevent it turning a yellowish colour.
