GOOD PROSPECTS AT TIMARU
Tomorrow’s Trotting Card A POPULAR fixture with South Island light-harness enthusiasts is that of the Timaru Trotting Club, which stages two sessions annually. Tomorrow the summer function comes up for decision, when .some interesting contests should be witnessed. A review of the card by “Abaydos” is appended.
j The Timaru club at its summer fix- | ture caters for the useful type of trotter and pacer, without any pretence at attracting the higher grade classes. Handily situated the meeting appeals strongly to both Canterbury and Otago owners, with the result that fields at the New Year function are usually on the large side. The acceptances received for tomorrow’s schedule are well up to the mark and backers will find plenty of variety among the contestants on which to make a final choice. Several horses engaged have won at Greymouth since the appearance of the handicaps, and it is quite probable they have been penalised, although at time of writing rehandicaps have not come to hand, but these should have a distinct bearing on actual results. Claremont Handicap A number of novice square-gaiters appear on the front of this handicap, of which Faina, Merrijigs, Robert Todd and White Satin are perhaps the best known. The latter, owned by Mr. G. McMillan, was given a race or, two on the West Coast and should profit from the experience. Further back. Saka Bona and King’s Voyage hold good prospects, while Brent Boy and Kereta are likely to prove dangerous. The public may prefer to rely on King’s Voyage and White Satin. Improvers’ Handicap There is a large field engaged here, |
shown good improvement of late and ho may bo the pick of the basket. Nell do Beau should be benefited by the spell since she raced in Auckland, but a shorter heat later in the day will probably be more suitable. Millie de Oro is a smart pacer, and Firebrand and Jupiter are of the solid type. When backers get busy they may record most votes for St. George and Mussolini. Waimate Handicap Square-gaiters again have an opportunity to display their prowess and the real stayers will be in demand on this occasion. Of the limit contingent Bonora lias been showing fair form, and St. Petrox, Brent Boy, Great Harvester and King’s Voyage are capable of a good showing. Then there is Deceitful, a mare that showed fine promise last June at Hastings. Great Kay and Tot Logan are recent winners, and Scuttle is nicely placed for a race of this description. Admiral Bingen has yet to prove ability as a stayer, and Peter Lin, good trotter that he is, has a lot of ground to make up. The favourite selection may be Tot Logan and Deceitful. Pareroa Handicap Some pretty smart pacers will measure strides in this item and several of those engaged have recent form to enhance their prospects. Cuslila D’Or should be right at home in the tenfurlong journey while Erin’s Lynn and Reta McKinney are a smart duo. Ricardo should be a nuisance if he gets going quickly, and Gibraltar may prefer to wait for the saddle heat. Royal Comrade is sure of a lot of support, and Auditress and Delightful will go a merry mile and a-quarter. Bay Nut and Roddy are in
with the usual big front line; many of whom have yet to make good in company. Brixton has a good reputation in private, and Golden Vale, Jeanette Locanda and Key Child are expected to be prominent. Silverwood has recent placed form as a recommendation, while Ulm was returned a winner on the Coast. Of those further back Pink Sugar, Author Franz, Loganbrae, Otaio Rose, Petronius, Millie de Oro and John Noble will give trouble to the limit brigade. If Ulm is not unreasonably penalised he may find favour, with Silverwood and Otaio Rose. President’s Handicap With a field of nine the principal event of the day should prove a keen contest, and fancies will no doubt take a wide range. Carbine Direct is a solid customer, and Delightful. if caught in the humour can go a merry two miles. Grand Light is a likely one to show marked improvement since August- and will have a lot of friends. Lady Cello is in winning vein, and if she can get the journey will be bard to head off. Hector’s Own is a useful mare over all distances and should b.e at home in this field. Orphan and Omaha have both recently won over short courses, but they may be held safe by Arikitoa, who is at present in fine trim. When right Laplander can make things interesting, but he may not be ready for such a race. Final selections may favour Arikitoa and Grand Light. Levels Handicap A useful lot of improvers will sport silk for this event, and again the bulk of the starters appear on the front mark. Grace Huon and Jessie Huon are a speedy pair, and Mussolini has been racing consistently, if unluckily. St. George is one that should have
form and can be relied upon to make it interesting, while Great Triumph only requires to hop off the right leg to be in at the "kill.” Warepa will keep them all busy, but favouritism may rest with Cush la D’Or and Royal Comrade. Salisbury Handicap Improving pacers with pretensions to stamina are afforded a chance to try themselves out in this event. Baron Bingen may show improvement, and Sandy Pointer is a likely one to see the journey right out. Sonoma Laddie is on the improve, and Pleasant Wave is said to be more than useful. Mountain Ore can stay all right, and Cyone’s recent display must be viewed in a favourable light, while Rolex and Vikota will add interest to the contest. Kautoma is a genuine stayer, and the trotter Peter Lin will be a tough nut to crack. Wakataua is a holiday winner with good possibilities. When the machine is adjusted the fancies may foe Cyone and Sandy Pointer. Farewell Handicap Tho popularity of the saddle heat is shown by the fine field and it will be a keen race, with speculators well puzzled. Some of the runners appear earlier in the day, and their form on that occasion will no doubt throw further light on their prospects. Glen Farg, King Abdullah and Tennessee Child are a trio of hard heads that know the saddle business thoroughly, and if they are back to form will add interest to the proceedings. Nell de Beau can scamper a merry mile, while Gibraltar is partial to the weight on top. Wild Spur, Krina and Lough Neagh are a useful lot, but the final choice may fall on Gibraltar and Nell de Beau.
