Easy for Taneriri

ENVOY THE SPRINT WINNER Opening Day at Thames ALTHOUGH most races were won very easily at Thames yesterday, the opening of the annual meeting of the Thames Jockey Club was not without interest. Taneriri walked away with the Goldfields Cup. and the sprint saw Envoy register an attractive victory.

There was a fair attendance, and the .weather was tine and warm. The totalisator handled £16,296 10s, against £19.513 last year. The opening day of the previous meeting, however, was held on a Saturday, and although the. decrease yesterday was £3,216 10s, the sum handled was slightly in excess of the figures on the off day at the preceding fixture. Fields were on the small side, although of two-dividend proportions throughout. The management of the day’s sport was first-class, and the racing was such as to call for no inquiry into the running of any of the competitors. Taneriri made light of his penalty in the Goldfields Cup, and he won with a good deal in hand from Le Choucas, who in turn convincingly defeated the favourite, Flying Juliet. Envoy was favoured in the jumpout in the Flying Handicap, and shaking off Hakanoa in the straight, finally won by a couple of lengths. Branson finished third, and indicated that he will soon be at his best. Vital and Valcuir, the dividend payers in the Tapu Handicap, were both at long prices, while Mashoor, winner of the second race, was also at a good price. After this, however, the public were well on the mark. Notes on the racing and details of results follow: Tapu Handicap Tuku (£215) was a sound favourite for the Tapu Handicap, with good support for the Measurer-Section bracket (£181), but the dividend-payers were both at long odds, Vital carrying only £42 10s, and giving a return of over a score, while Valcuir’s support amounted to £lB, the dividend being just over three-parts of a score. St. Warrigal was the last away, and the favourite was the early leader from Vital, Norval Tea, Glenison, Dainty Manners, Miss Albyn and Valour, and as they passed the half-mile Norval Tea and Vital were together clear of Glenison, . Valcuir, Miss Albyn, Tuku, Valour, Dainty Manners, Grand Arch and Ho wick. Norval Tea had a slight advantage over Vital at the home turn with a length and a-half back to Glenison, Valcuir, Dainty Manners, Tuku and Miss Albyn, the quintette being bunched. Norval Tea weakened visibly in the run home, and finishing strongly Vital had a two-lengths’ victory over Valcuair, who beat Tuku by six lengths Norval Tea was fourth and then came Glenison, Measurer, Dainty Manners, St. Warrigal, Princess Snow and Howick. Borough High-Weight Numerous scratchings in the Borough High-weight Handicap reduced the field to eight and backers went strongly for Asmodeus (£267) and Taumai (£213) in an even betting race, the chief places, however, going to Mashoor (£127) and War Officer (£149). Night Comet was early in charge and led out of the straight from Mashoor, Waltzer, Taumai, Asmodeus, War Officer and Gay Caballero, but once they hit the back stretch Waltzer went to the front and made play from Night Comet and Taumai (together), Mashoor, Gay Caballero, Bizarro, Asmodeus and War Officer, there being little separating any of the runners. Passing across the top War Officer moved up quickly and at the bend he was just in behind Waltzer, their attendants comprising Night Comet, Asmodeus, and Mashoor. War Officer was momentarily checked at this stage but 100 yards from the post he looked the winner, but Mashoor finished the stronger and beat him by a neck, with :he favourite third, a length away. Night Comet crossed the line next, followed by Gay Caballero, Taumai, Waltzer and Bizarro. Puriri Handicap A big field contested the Puriri Handicap, and it was a wonderful betting race, with Cruachan £233 favourite at a line price over On Top £2OB, while Big Bertha carried £137. Bed Lion, Parfait Amour, On Top, Patere and Cruachan were the first to show out, and at the end of a furlong On Top was clear of Welcome Boy, Patere, Volimond, Parfait Amour, Cruachan and Red Lion, with Big Bertha, Whakama and Some Lady tailing the field. On Top still had charge crossing the top and approaching the home turn, with Welcome Boy, Cruachan, Patere, Valstreet, Volimond, Parfait Amour, ‘Bed Lion and Big Bertha following. Welcome Boy ran up to On Top coming round the bend, and the latter carried Welcome Boy off the course, leaving .he favourite Cruachan with a straight run on the rails to go on and win by two lengths from Big Bertha, who finished well from behind. Patere was a neck away third, with On Top (who looked a certainty beaten), next, followed by Parfait Amour, Volimond, Valstreet. Some Lady. Luxurious and Welcome Boy. Goldfields Cup Sir Russell and Good Boy were the course withdrawals in the Goldfields Cup and backers showed a preference for Flying Juliet, who wound up with £591. as against Taneriri £438, and Le Choucas £432. Glenstar took up the role of pacemaker, and passing the stands was attended by Taneriri. Flying Juliet, High Pitch, Marble King, j Le Choucas and Transformer, and with j Flying Juliet deposing Taneriri this was the only material change in the j order as they swept along the back, i With half a mile to go Flying Juliet 1 ranged alongside Glenstar, and following the pair came Taneriri, Marble King. High Pitch. Transformer' and Le Choucas. Glenstar and Flying j Juliet were still together at the straight, but they had only a slight j call over Taneriri and Le Choucas. with High Pitch, Transformer and j Marble King next. With the pressure , on Taneriri came right away from his j field and recorded an impressive win j by four lengths over Le Choucas, who j beat Flying Juliet by two lengths. : Glenstar was a moderate fourth, and j High Pitch led home Transformer and Marble King. The winner outclassed the field on the day. Parawai Handicap Archieval was an odds-on favourite in the Parawai Handicap, and had support to the extent of £794, with a big drop to Master Latour (£362) and Crimestor (£336). The favourite was drawn on the extreme outei’ and received all the worst of the start, Quinsilia leading out from Liona, Snow Prince, Master Latour, Grand Tea, Crimestor, Diamond Queen and Archieval, but Master Latour soon ran to the front and chasing him down the track were Liona, Quinsilia, Crimestor, Snow Prince, Archieval, Grand Tea, Diamond Queen and Snow Prince. The favourite made up a lot of ground from the top onward and at the turn he was on the outside of Master Latour and Liona, with Diamond Queen. Quinsilia,. Crimestor, Grand Tea and Snow Prince following. Archieval did it well in the run home and had a margin of half a length over Diamond Queen on the post. Grand Tea was two and a-half lengths away third, and succeeding him were Quinsilia, Snow

Prince, Crimestor, Liona and Master Latour. Flying Handicap Five scratchings reduced the field in the Flying Handicap to half a dozen, and Hakanoa and Envoy was the only pair seriously considered, carrying £559 and £525, respectively, Joy Girl being third choice with £330. Envoy was favoured by the start and led Billikins, Branson, Hakanoa, Joy Girl and White Wings, but with two furlongs passed Billikins assumed command over Envoy, Joy Girl, Hakanoa and White Wings, the lastnamed putting in a dab momentarily crossing the top. Envoy and Billikins came round the turn together, with Hakanoa (outside), Branson (rails), Joy Girl and White Wings following. Hakanoa endeavoured to overhaul the leaders, but made little impression on Envoy, who won by two lengths, the favourite being a further length and a-half ahead of Branson. Billikins, Joy Girl and White Wings were next in that order. The winner won well and should meet with further success. Hakanoa ran a decent race, and Branson performed pleasingly, considering it is quite a time since he last raced. Waitakaruru Handicap Tuku, making his second appearance on the day, was a good favourite for the Waitakaruru Handicap. He carried £655, Coll being second choice with £605, while Brampton (£291) was at good odds. Indolent got all the worst of the start, and going out of the straight Coll had charge from Always, Tuku, Orchus and Brampton, and once into the back Always took up the running from Tuku, Coll, Orchus, Indolent, Brampton and Day Lass. Always and Tuku were together at the home bend, while Brampton was showing up on the outside just ahead of Orchus, Coll and Day Lass, who were all close up. Brampton issued a strong challenge once straightened Lip, and he easily disposed of Coll by a length and a-half, with the tiring favourite a neck back third. Day Lass finished fast, to be only a neck away in fourth place, and then came Always, Orchus and Indolent. Brampton’s win was long overdue, and it was deservedly popular. Day Lass was very Linlucky. Hauraki Plains Handicap A bare two-dividend field came out for the final event, Mosaic £629, Archeen £523 and Good Boy £467 carrying most stipport. Good Boy led round the bend from Mosaic. Tanagra,

Archeen, Unoco and Billikins. Entering the back stretch Tanagra went to the front to lead Good Boy, Unoco and Archeen, with Billikins and Mosaic well back last. Tanagra came back to his field approaching the straight, where he still had a slight lead, being followed closely by Archeen, Unoco, Billikins and Good Boy, Mosaic running out very wide on the turn. Inside the distance Tanagra, Archeen and Billikins were fighting it out just in front of Good Boy, but the latter came with a fine burst and won by a length from Archeen, who was half a length in front of Tanagra, Billikins being close up foLirth. Mosaic was next and Unoco last. Following are the results: TAPU HANDICAP Of £100; 6 furlongs 11—VITAL (J. H. Winder), b g, by Greyspear—Vitella, syrs, 5.3, T. Green l 14—VALCUIR, 5.0,. O.
