Alien, the 58 Mau Samoans, who were summoned to met the Administrator, refused to do so. They sent a letter holding out certain reasons for their absence. The order set out the names of those required to be at Mulinuu to meet tbe Administrator on Wednesday, January 8, at 9 a.m. Tbe Mau has entirely vacated the Faleata and Vaimauga districts as required, by assembling at Leauvaa and Solesolo. No Mau uniforms have been seen in Apia today. The position is quiet. ULTIMATUM TO MAU ONLY COURSE IN CIRCUMSTANCES SIR JOSEPH WARD’S VIEW A telegraphed protest yesterday against the Government’s ultimatum to the Mau, made by Mr. W. E. Barnard, Labour M.P. for Napier, has drawn the following reply from the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward: “I have your telegram of yesterday in reference to the Samoan situation, and much appreciate the expression of your views. The Government must, however, take responsibility for the course it has decided to adopt, which is, in its opinion, the only one possible in the circumstances. The Government always has been, and still is, anxious to confer with the Mau. They cannot take this step while the law la defied.” '
