Past Year’s Building Valued at £2,384,000
GREATER AUCKLAND DECREASE OF £221,500 The total value of building permits issued by the local authorities of Greater Auckland for 1929 is disclosed by the year’s returns as £2,384,000 This sum represents a net decrease of £221,500, or approximately Si per cent. The difference is accounted for largely by the fact that 192 S was the year in which several big works were started in the City, including the new railway station, which alone would account for £328,000. The statistics show that the number of new dwellings for which permits were granted was 1,186. one less than in 1928. The total value, under this heading, was £1,052,000. The value of permits issued by the respective authorities in 1929 aud 1928. including permits for additions and alterations, is shown in the following table:—
Although a majority of the districts show decreases, two of the North Shore boroughs record a considerable advance. The Devonport figure has nearly doubled and Taltapuna’s Is about one-third more. Ellerslie has experienced a rise of nearly 40 per cent., and Papatoetoe, One Tree Hill and Birkenhead also come out on the right side, although by narrower margins. The following is a return of the number and value of permits for new dwellings in 1929, with the number issued in 1925, for purposes of comparison:—
Here again Devonport shows an increase in the neighbourhood of 100 per cent. Takapuna, Auckland City, Mount Albert and Papatoetoe have advanced. There has been a heavy fall-ing-off in the districts along the northern railway, the reason given by one local body being that speculative building has ceased in that region. Blocks of flats are included in the monthly returns forwarded to the Government Statistician by the local authorities, but whether as individual “dwellings” or groups of the latter is not clear. A detailed return of permits for such buildings is not obtainable at present. Generally, the figures show that building in Greater Auckland has been maintained on the whole very well in the past year. Although liouse-build-ing is everywhere described as "quiet,” living accommodation has been provided, at a modest estimate, for an additional 4,000 people.
