ON THE GREEN
Bowls and Bowlers
(By
JACK HIGH.)
The touring party of Canadian lers has come and gone. As ex--150 n ts of the game on the green it b.' admitted that they were cer"nlV not super players: but as h wlers upholding the fine traditions of social side of the sport and amK?.««!adors of a great British Dominion ‘' werP splendid. Nobody expects .very high standard of play from a H rtv of touring bowlers. It seems Thlt If We are to have Rood players nirne to our shores there will have to ! a reconstruction of the present sysJ’ of representation and that in--1 Ives a bier question, bringing in many '2 rV debatable side issues. Nevertliei our recent visitors were the first r-inadian bowlers to officially visit : h , a Dominion, and as pioneers in this •espect. they have carried out their :;V lt purpose, for they have established a wholesome friendship with the bowlers of this centre, from which 1 * n the most pessimistic commentators must admit that great developments are possible in the immediate future.
In the entertainment of our Can- • dlan friends the centre executive is to be heartily commended on the . •triable thought and able carrying out ‘ the many details of the very full ‘rogramme; and the culminating opportunity afforded the rank and file of he sport to meet the visitors at the .nlendid function staged at the Scots Xu on Saturday night last must further assure them that the administration of their affairs is certainly in ‘ bunds. The evening established l magnificent precedent in respect to the entertainment of visitors and adds another milestone to bowling development in this City. Its success assures that similar functions will be arranged In future. Certainly no combined bowing function has ever reached such a high standard. It is to be regretted, however, that some of the prominent clubs were noticeable for the absence , many of their members and the kindest thing that can be said is that the inclement weather prohibited these bowlers participation. The reply to the welcome by Dr. W. Krupn. captain of the party, disclosed speaker of deep thought and sincere purpose. He showed that the members of his party were not only concerned with the mere playing of L-ames but with the establishment of warm ’personal friendships and the studying o; this Dominion’s resources, ind he took the opportunity of making itn eloquent appeal for tho further development of inter-Dominion trade between New Zealand and Canada. Our Canadian friends showed wisdom in the selection of their leader, who made a lasting impression on those who were fortunate enough to hear him on Saturday night. . Despite adverse weather conditions necessitating the abandoning of the first day’s play, the Romuera Club s New Year tournament can be voted a lyivg success. Those who attended the event witnessed for the first occasion in the history of tho game in the Dominion 232 bowlers playing on one club’s green at the same time. In respect to this number it is interesting to note that this number exactly coincides with the participants in the Auckland Centre's Christmas tournament. Also it might be explained that 54 teams entered the tournament and the other four teams comprised members of the club indulging in games on their own account for the day. The huge event went off without any hitches and the tournament committee and the club have the satisfaction of staging the record event. It was unfortunate that, the weather conditions necessitated the cutting down of he games to 12 heads, but the president? Mr. E. E. Daniels, evidently took all the blame for this when he said that during this season ‘h® club had had no less than seven events rudely interrupted similarly, and claimed that he was the "reigning president. Pro I,ably he would have ''’''‘“"LV. designation on January 2 at the rain ing president.’’ # „ Unfortunately, the concluding « l uges of the tournament could not be played or Saturday. However, it is interest ing to note that Roherf.son’s Onehunga teLn. comprising Mcfjulre, Maeklow, Kenny, the combination that has won the even* the last two seasons, and a team headed by tho club’s champion of champions bowler is included. - rink under the famous HelensviUe skip Smith, also found a place, ana a team headed by Bray, of the home club. The team ifnder Thompson o. Hillsboro, is also a strong combination. and proved its worth on that day. Toe final stages should produce boyvling of a very high standard. It looked more than likely, on past performances prior to the final that the Grey Lynn team, comprising Mincham, Lever sidge. Buckley and M. Whittle, would annex the champion banner of Auckland for the first sion for their club. The quartet had beaten their final opponents the previous evening, and up to that stage had shown remarkable form by onl> losing one graine in the whole tournament. However. as characterises many final tussles for biff events, they •lid not display the bowling ability as in the earlier games. The members however, are to be warmly congratulated on their fine performance in the tournament, although not pulling oft the final honours. They made an easy victory over the Carlton combination under Carter, but did not just ha.vo the form to carry them through the concluding game. They were only beaten previously by Truscott’s team. * «• *
In bringing the banner to the Onehunga club, E. B. Wright s team has shown clear bowling supremacy. This is the second occasion that the famous skip has been, associated with a team which has accomplished this outstanding bowling feat, and, strangely enough it was on the first occasion when the banner was played for in Auckland, away back in 1913, that the victory was made, showing that during the passing of years he has lost little, if any. of his bowling prowess. Then, as in 1930. Wright has associated with him J. E. Cowell, who played number three on that occasion, and this time assisted in the position of number two. The position of lead was filled by J. E. Green, the popular coach of the suburban club, who played consistently throughout the tournament. A word of praise should be handed S. Vella, the capable number three of the rink. He is a young player who has shown remsirkable progress in the game. His success in Carlton’s Labour Day tournament followed by excellent bowling denoting a strong fighting spirit when Tip against stern opposition, in the recent open singles championship, combini d with his outstanding play in this tournament, marks him as a player who should take a permanent place in the front rank of bowling in the Queen City.
