MANAWATU NOTES

SCHOOLING UNDERTAKEN AT AWAPUNI PRINCESS BETTY’S FORM ! Special to THE SUN PALMERSTON N.. Wednesday. Although the weather continues to be somewhat uncertain, ground conditions were quite satisfactory yesterday morning and all the fast work was carried; out on the course proper. The flags were fairly close in, but the majority of the runners kept wide out. Battle Torque and Disrank were the first to gallop, the Martian mare leading the Lord Quex gelding home at the end of six furlongs which were run in 1.22. Battle Torque gives indication of winning a race before she is retired. I-lawkshaw kept Vinella busy over half a mile, which was negotiated in 52 2-5. The Australian-bred youngster, while somewhat small, is sturdilybuilt, and he certainly promises to develop into something good. Novar and Mister Gamp jumped off at the six-furlong post to run the last three furlongs in 42. The latter was going very strongly at the finish and was anxious to go on with it. He may be given his first outing for the new season at Trentham. Sporting Chance, who appears to have benefited by his outings at Tauherenikau, was not asked to give of his best in getting to the end of five furlongs in 1.15, after leaving the first two furlongs behind in 29. The Lackham colt has been entered for the two-year-old events at Trentham. Basaloma. from a standing start, got to the end of half a mile in 56 1-5, after taking 15 2-5 for the initial furlong. By Bisogne from Redlogue, this gelding had three starts last season as a three-year-old without figuring in the money and he again ran unplaced at the past Manawatu fixture. Disappointing Hacks Roundelay, who had an adavntage in the weights, proved to be too good for Callamart over six furlongs, which were left behind in 1.22, the first three being covered in 40. Roundelay did not run up to expectations at Christmas time, while Callamart showed up for a period in one of his races only to fade out of the picture over the final pinch. Commentator and Tea Poy finished on terms at the close of a four-furlong task which was accomplished in 56. The former is a Thurnham gelding from Comment, and the similarity in names with the Tractor-Commentary filly is liable to lead to confusion. Tea Poy is by Tea Tray, lie having come back into work following upon a lengthy spell. While the better performed jumpers such as Red Fuchsia, Elicit. Aurora Borealis, Mister Gamp, Vinella, etc., were restricted to pace work on the plough or fast work on the grass, there were several novices who were tried over the battens.

Good Acre was sent a round with Airforce, the former setting the pace and Airforce had to be hurried along to keep with the Acre filly. The Warplane gelding is the more experienced jumper, but Good Acre might well make good at the game with further tuition. As she comes from L. Knapp’s stable, such should not be wanting.

Birkie and Royal Mission were likewise companions on a round over the battens, the former jumping the straighter. The latter has command of a good turn of speed and the jumping should assist toward sobering him down, he having been inclined tovai d unrulincss in his racing. March On, the veteran companion of k, l ;* Vi’ wa , s later sent a round alone, but the chestnut did not display the same certainty in his fencing. The Novices

Rouex was given a good try-out over two rounds, the Kilbroney gelding giving a clean display, although he was not over quick in getting away on landing, while Fiery Comet was restricted to one round. It was the latter s hrst essay over the battens locally, although he had jumping experience prior to linking up with E W. Watson’s string. First Ruler is also being given an insight into the game by A. Quinlivan, so there are plenty of novices to be presented in the near future The Leighton gelding Pari has been purchased by G. W. New and has now linked up with that mentor’s team Mrs. A. McDonald effected the purchase of a hunter by Lucullus from a Alarble Arch mare during the progress of the Auckland meeting. Moutoa Treasury is on the easy list at present as the result of lameness, and there appears to be little possibility of her racing for some little time at least.

Mrs. McDonald missed the Foxton nominations, but has Elicit, Black Acre, Blue Paper, Warzone and Llyn Dhu entered for Ashhurst. However, Blue Paper and Llyn Dhu are also in at Trentham and they will probably prefer the more important fixture. J. P. Coyle has only Mister Gamp and Glenrossie in on the opening day at Trentham, but Keddar, King Acre and Pahu claim engagements on the second day. This stable will not be represented at Ashhurst.

Although Mrs. A. McDonald is more usually associated with jumpers, she can. put the finishing touches on fiat candidates, and during her absence at Ellerslie with Gesture and Nimble, two or her team members in Warzone and Airforce won for her on their home course. The latter has already been introduced to the jumping branch. While Mr. A. Symes elected to dispose of his crack filly Gesture, he has still housed in Mrs. McDonald’s stable at Awapuni the diminutive Nimble (who ran second in the Nursery at Ellerslie) in addition to his jumper Elicit. The former was a particularly small foal, but she is now commencing to develop in physique and might turn out good, although it is problematical whether she will ever reach the heights of Gesture. Won at Home

Although Princess Betty did not elect to take on the Auckland trip, she fared quite well at home when she followed up her second in the Nursery Handicap with a spectacular victory over Paganelli in the Palmerston North Stakes. On the latter occasion, instead of acting as pacemaker, she was allowed to run along in behind and then finished on in improved style. Originally for sale at 500gns.. the Chief Ruler filly has to date won £BBS for owner-trainer G. New, and it would no doubt be impossible to do business at that figure; now.

A few weeks back Pahu was an unnamed maiden by Warplane from a Sarto-Canella mare, but he had given evidence of developing into something useful. He was given two outings at Manawatu, running fifth on the second occasion, and was then produced at Marton to win the Ladies’ Bracelet on the second day and give Mr. J T. Morris another winning ride in this class of event. It is now reported that Messrs. Trevor and McMillan have purchased Pahu from J. P. Coyle and, bred as he is, it is safe to say that he will be put to the jumping game.

Ranking as one of the most unlucky horses in training at Awapuni, Vinella has at last proved herself capable of securing a major stake. Last season she ran four thirds and a second without being able to secure the big end of a stake. Matters did not promise over well in the new season when she entered upon a run of seconds. However, her performance in running a close second to Fine Acre at Woodville indicated that her turn would not be long, even though she retreated one berth on the opening day at Marton, and she duly opened her overdue account on the second day. when she led Aurora Borealis and Skyrider home. In all, local mentors presented 14 winners, 18 second place-getters and eight thirds during the course of the Christmas and New: Year racing.
