AMERICAN CLOTH

MANY USES IN THE HOME American cloth fulfils the present desire to make a dashing effect by the very simplest meafls. Strong colour contrasts are made possible by a comprehensive range of pinks, lime and orange yellows, blue in saxe and royal shades, vermilion, crimson and blacl> as glistening as patent leather. It has innumerable applications in the home, both decorative and workaday. In the bathroom it can be used for curtains, and will be proof against the steamy conditions. A basement kitchen can be wonder--1 fully enlivened by the colour and bright reflection which American cloth in sealing-wax red will introduce into a dark corner, when pasted on to the top or used at the back of the shelves of some old-fashioned dresser—especially if a tablecover of gaily-chequered oilcloth in red and white squares is used on the kitchen table. American cloth can be used for covers on simple kinds of chairs, but, though it will add gaiety, it must not ■ be expected to stand like leather, and sooner or later—sooner, perhaps—there is bound to be trouble with the : wear on the folds. Its more practical uses would therefore seem to be on : flat surfaces, on which it should be : stuck with strong flour-paste.— > "Homes and Gardens."
