CHEEKY THEFT
YOUNG THIEF RIFLES SHOP " TILL YEAR’S PROBATION Finding liis salary of 15s a week insufficient for his needs, Christopher Daly, according to Sub-Inspector McCarthy, entered a shop recently and stole £1 2s from the till. Daly, a labourer, aged 22, appeared at the Police Court this morning for sentence on a charge of stealing chocolate valued at 2s, and £1 2s in money on January 1, the property of Emily Croton.
The sub-inspector said at accused’s last appearance when he pleaded guilty, that it was a cheeky theft. The man had met a customer as he was emerging from behind the counter and told him 1 hat the proprietress of the shop would be there in a moment. This morning the sub-inspector said Daly had been up, once before * for stealing a hat, when he had been convicted and discharged. He had been out from Scotland about four years, knocking about the Waikato, and as far South as Opunake. He had recently been working at a cookshop in Newton, where he had been paid 15s a week, and given his food. His explanation was that he wanted money for clothes and yielded to sudden temptation. Accused was admitted to probation for 12 months, and ordered- to make restitution of £1 2s.
