MOTOR-SPEED RECORD

KAYE DON TESTS CAR ON PENDINE SANDS TO MAKE RUN THIS YEAR British Official Wireless RUGBY, Monday. i The famous British racing motorist, \ Mr. Kaye Don, expects to make an ] attempt this year on the world’s land j speed record of 231 miles an hour, ! held by Sir Henry Segrave. Yesterday he tested in his racing car the suitability of the Pendine Sands, Carmarthenshire, for his effort. Mr. Don had kept his visit a secret in order to have the seven-mile stretch of sands clear. He used the SunbeamTiger car in which Sir Henry Segrave established the world’s record in 1926. Although it was raining and a gale was blowing, Mr. Don drove over the course at a speed of 155 miles an hour. The sands were iOO wet to enable him to form a definite opinion as to their suitability. He will make a further test after having consulted the designer as to the acceleration and deceleration of the Sunbeam 4,000 horse-power car known as the Silver Bullet, which has been constructed for his attempt on the record. It was on Pendine Sands, tbe noted Welsh motor-racing Beach, that Parry Thomas was killed while endeavouring to break a world’s record in March, 192 R. His car, “Balls,” was chain-driven and he was decapitated when ©«• of the chains broke.
