JOURNALIST’S DEATH

LONG SERVICE IN OAMARU AUTHORITY ON EDUCATION Press Association OAMARU, Today. Mi’. James Mitchell, perhaps the oldest working journalist in New Zealand, died this morning at Oamaru. He was born at Upper Hutt and was educated in Wellington, later working at Wellington, Napier, Christchurch and* Dunedin on both mechanical and literary sides of newspapers. His newspaper career extends over 67 years, over 50 of which being as a member of the “Oamaru Mail” staff. He had a remarkable record of semi-public life, for more than 50 years continuously being a member of the North School committee, and for 39 years being chairman of the same committee. He was an enthusiastic bandsman, an original member of the Oamaru Garrison Band, and for 50 years was its treasurer. He served both as member and chairman of the Otago Education Board, and was one of the Dominion’s authorities on education.
