GERMANY DEPRESSED
MANY SUICIDES FOLLOW ADVERSITY WIDESPREAD UNEMPLOYMENT United P. A.—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Monday. The Berlin correspondent of the “Manchester Guardian” says there has been an abnormally large number of suicides in Germany since the New Year. Between January 1 and 3 there were 31 cases of attempted suicide, 22 of which were fatal. Many women have taken gas. Others have drowned, hanged or shot themselves. Two septuagenarians jumped from balconies. The dead include, a well-known author and theatrical manager, who was in financial straits. Many of the victims were workmen and business people who had been reduced to desperation by unemployment or bad trade. Seasonal unemployment is approaching its peak. At present there are 1,600,000 people throughout Germany receiving the dole. Many thousands have exceeded the dole period. The total number of persons out of work is 2,200,000. This figure is expected to increase. In spite of the mild weather distress is acute.
