TUMULT OF WELCOME
ROYAL BRIDE ARRIVES AT ROME SHOWERED WITH BLOOMS Reed. 10.40 a.m. ROME, Sunday. Princess Marie Jose of Belgium, who is to be married on Wednesday to the Crown Prince Humbert of Italy, has arrived at Rome. The Duke of York, also, who is to represent the King at the wedding, has arrived. • The princess was accompanied by her fat ler and mother, King Albert and Queen Elizabeth of the Belgians. The Royal party was welcomed at the railway station by King Victor Emmanuel and Queen Helen, of Italy, and the other members of the Italian Royal Family. Despite the necessity for elaborate precautians against outrage the arrival platform was crowded. Among those present were Princes, Princesses, Ambassadors and other notable personages. The appearance of King Albert, who was the first to leave the railway carriage, was the signal tor tumultuous cheering. Prince Humbert, who was helping Princess Marie Jose to alight from the train, was greeted with even more rapturous cheering. The Princess was dressed entirely in white and was a charming figure. Her fiance, the Crown Prince, was in full uniform. As they drove to the Quirinal Palace past enormous cheering crowds the young couple were pelted with flowers from balconies, windows and terraces. Many of the blooms fell on the escorting Cuirassiers. The Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, and his Ministers did not go to the station, but were presented to the Belgian Royal Family at the Quirinal. The popularity of the coming mar‘iage has been enhanced greatly by the fact that 400 prisoners sentenced •or minor ofTences were released as a mark of clemency on the occasion.
