CIVIC

FINE PROGRAMME Excellent entertainment is offered at the Civic Theatre this week, comprising a colourful stage show, with dancing, in addition to the musical and pictorial side. Ted Henkel’s stage presentation, entitled “Divertissment," opens with a graceful “Bouquet of Flowers" dance by the Civic ballet girls, followed by exhibitions of dancing by Ramon and Madeline, and by Pedro. Mr. Henkel introduces individual members of his band, the ballet dances, “The Breakaway," and' Fred Scholl at the grand organ pleases everyone with his playing of Paderewski’s “Minuet" and the laughing novelty, “The Clown.” Then comes “Flight," the fine alltalking drama of the air. In the story, following the annual Harvard-Yale football match, “Lefty" Phelps (Ralph Graves), who won the game for the opposing side by running to the wrong goal, joins the flying squad of the marines. He is under the instruction of “Panama" Williams (Jack Holt), a daredevil aviator. Williams, who was present at the eventful football game, recognises Lefty. Realising that the lad feels the whole world is against him, Williams becomes friendly with Lefty. They become real pals. Lefty falls in love with Elinor (Lila Lee), a nurse at the base. The days that follow are filled with daring deeds in the air and skirmishes with rebel bandits. When Lefty gets lost in the wilderness Williams flies to his rescue. He is wounded by an antiaircraft gun. He lands his plane near Lefty, only to fall unconscious. The rebel leader and his men are closing in Lefty puts his pal in his plane and flies off to the base. He makes a safe landing with a broken landing gear. He wins his flying insignia for his deed. Williams realises that Lefty is not to blame for his disappointed love affair and wishes them happiness in their life together.
