OUT OF THE LOCKER

NEWS FROM MANY PLACES The plan to hold an Australasian contest on the Waitemata for the "Star" boats has been adjourned until March. It was first thought that early in January would be the most suitable date, particularly for the visiting boat from the Sydney fleet. However, Ola IV.. owned by Mr. Swinnerton, has not been placed in the water yet and though Auckland can now muster three boats, the required number for a ‘‘fleet” to make an entry, it is not contemplated that any races should be held without Ola competing. Mr. Swinnerton is on holiday at Norfolk Island. As soon as Ola can be counted on, the competitions will be held. * * # Mr. J. Hislop, of Devonport, who has made a re-entry in boating circles by acquiring the launch Silens, had a Christmas cruise about the Gulf in his boat, taking a party of 32. Leaving port on Boxing Bay, Silens made Ilocky Bay for the first evening. The cruise was extended through Cowes. Man o' War Bay and via Matiatia to Kawau, Mahurangi and Waiwera, to Auckland. Raira. owned by Mr. A. Foster, was met in Man o’ War Bay on a short cruise, having left Auckland on the Friday after Christmas. At Kawau there was a great press of boats, many of which stayed most of the holiday. Mr. Hislop had little that was favourable to say of the weather, but still his. party thoroughly enjoyed the vacation. Last weekend the launch was taken to Islington Bay, but had the misfortune to meet with a small mishap to the steering gear. » * • The new Star rig has been officially sanctioned by the Star class officials in U.S.A. It means four feet less on the boom and five feet more on the mast. # • * The flying outboard, so devoutly wished for by many a competitor in class racing, has arrived. The new design actually lifts oft the water. It is a combined airplane and outboardengined hull. Aptly enough it is called I'egasus. * .* * It is likely that four new boats will be built to defend the America Cup against the Shamrock. Two are being designed for New York owners by Burgess and Clinton and H. Crane; a Boston boat has been laid down to the drawings of Frank Paine. The fourth boat is to the order of a New York Yacht Club syndicate, and will be of a new metal alloy known as KA2. The designer is Herreshoff. This will make the biggest fleet that has ever sailed for the famed cup.

The Great Lakes championship, for the Star class, was one of the big events in the yachting world on the inland "Oceans of America.” The competition was close. In one race only 20secs separated the first and last boats as they passed the judges. The champion boat. Twinkle Ditto, belonged to Chicago. Her crew lost the first two races, but tied with points by winning the third, and in the final, won after a tremendous fight. ANNIVERSARY REGATTA Entries for all events in the Auckland Anniversary Regrata close on Friday, January 17. The decision was made at a meeting of the regatta committee last evening under the chairmanship of Mr. E. B. Webster. Commodore Blake wrote stating that in the event of H.M.S. Dunedin being in port an Anniversary Day she would bo thrown open to the public. A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. John Marshall, a life member of the regatta committee, was passed in silence, members standing. Mr. P. Carter reported that 11 Tauranga 7ft one-design boats would be taking part in the regatta. Two races for this class were added to the programme, including a championship event. Mr. E. Leßoy was elected a life member of the committee. RACING BEGINS AGAIN After three weeks’ cessation for the holidays, club racing will begin again on Saturday. The Richmond Cruising Club has its annual regatta for the mullet boat classes and smaller craft. The' events will start off the Ponsonby Wharf, as in former seasons.

The outboard division of the New Zealand Power Boat Association will hold a. series of races on the Panmure Basin, the first event starting at 2.30. The races are handicap events, the first being for B class engines, the second for C class, the third for D class and over, the fourth for B and C engined boats combined, the fifth for D and over again, and the final race a general handicap. Over at Bayswater the Takapuna Boating Club will hold further trials for the selection of the Auckland boys to defend the Cornwell Cup at Otago next month. MODEL YACHT NOTES Owing to the heavy rain on Saturday model yacht racing on the Orakei Basin did not take place. Intending competitors for prizes appearing on the Auckland Anniversary Regatta programme are reminded that entries close for the open handicap on January 13. In connection with this event it may be mentioned that models must be sailed by their respective owners, who will be allowed one assistant to row the dinghy, if so desired. No more than one entry will be accepted from any owner. In view of the increasing interest shown this year, it behoves intending competitors not to miss the closing date.
