MEETING OF SPILLS
KILMISTER'S SUCCESS WESTERN SPRINGS RACES The meeting on the cinders at Western Springs last evening was marked by a series of spills, every rider falling at some stage. In the first event Alf Mattson and Bill Allen fell together, the former’s ankle being sprained too badly to allow him to continue. Allen was not able to ride until near the end of the meeting, when he took the track in a match race against Wally Kilmister, the Wellington crack. Herbert’s motor stood on him, and he could not race in later events. Bray fell heavily in the second event, but came out again. Mangham crashed and was struck by his handle bars, his face being badly cut. Another Australian, Les Lawrance, fell with his machine and was winded. None of the injuries was serious, however, and all riders expect to be able to race next Saturday. Kilmister’s Douglas is not exceptionally fast, being passed often by Lionel van Praag on his “Ogden” Ariel, but fierce acceleration and good riding gave him the victory. The Wellington man’s machine starts easily, and he is out in front at once, hugging tlio inside. This enabled him to pass van Praag, who rides wide at the corners, allowing Kilmister to come up on the inside. Bray has sold his Douglas, and last night rode one of the machines owned by Auckland Speedways. Lawrance also rode one of the company’s machines, a, “Peashooter” Harley. His own mount is due to arrive today. Sticpewich had trouble early In the evening with his A.J.S., but did well later in the meeting. Sell Ctisey was foremost among the newer riders and showed excellent form after his initial spills In getting used to the new track surface.
