"EARLY BIRD "
Waipapakauri Fixture Nominations for the Waipapakauri meeting at Waipapakauri on January 25 close at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) with the secretary at Kaitaia, or with Messrs. Blomfield and Company, Auckland. His Last Ride? Acora in the concluding event of the Marton meeting was probably L. G. Morris’s last mount in a race, as he is shortly taking over from F. Tilley at Fordell. Out for a Spell Vallar failed to please in his training practically on the eve of the recent meeting at Ellerslie and in his two efforts he raced a long way below his best. He has been accorded a spell for a few weeks. Or, the Easy List Subsequent, to registering a useful gallop at headquarters on Saturday morning Avon Court received a bad kick on the shin bone, necessitating her being eased up, although she continues to come to the track. There is nothing serious anticipated, but it will mean that Avon Court will not be quite as forward as a number of others engaged at Takapuna at the end of the month. In Work Again J. Manuel has recommissioned Sala- | mander and the two-year-old Lady Court, and both were out working usefully at Ellerslie this morning. Salamander is bearing a more robust appearance as the result of his spell, and the filly has also furnished nicely. She gave some promise in the early spring by finishing third on the second day of the Avondale meeting, but later contracted a cold and had to be thrown out of work. Another For Sydney Cynique, who raced with moderate success in the North, has been purchased by H. R. Telford, the lessee of Pliar Lap. TJie ex-New Zealander is evidently desirous of gathering a team together for the suburban meetings in Sydney, for just recently he effected the purchase of Polyxena, a smart filly attached to J. T. Jamieson’s stable. Cynique will not be sent to Sydney immediately, being at present under W. Patterson’s charge at the Auckland Stud Company’s farm at Otahuhu, the intention being to give the son of Cynic an easy period prior to launching him on a campaign on the other side.
Aucklanders at Trentham The following horses from the Auckland Province have been accorded nominations for events at the Wellingon Racing Club summer meeting: Prince of Orange, Bells of Shandon. Hard Words, Anique, Prodice, In the Shade, Lunette, Ti Tree, Le Choucas. Mervette, Chang, Havaspot, Lady’s Boy, Red Lion and Ruling Chief. This Morning’s Work Ellerslie trainers were provided with number two grass for training this morning, and with the exception of one o;r two useful sprints the work was, just of a useful nature. Gold Money was allowed to bowl along at threequarter pace for half a mile, and for their task over a furlong further Tambourine and Neil registered 1.9 1-5, carving out the first two furlongs in 27 1-5, and then finishing together. Eager Rose got over six furlongs evenly in 1.24 1-5, and Respirator’s five took 1.7 4-5. Smart Gallop Another Thames candidate, Measurer, shaped in pleasing style by striding over five furlongs in 1.4, the first taking 12 3-5, and two 24 1-5. Silene covered the last three of five furlongs in 42, and Merry Lu disposed of half a mile in 52 2-5. Puriri Park led Sub Editor over three furlongs in 38, both doing it nicely. The latter is a two-year-old by Surveyor from Bunty (Archiestown —Rosette), and will race in the joint interests of Miss Grant and Mr. W. Patterson. This was the colt’s first sprint, and he displayed a nice turn of speed. At Otahuhu Kairuri, who was responsible for a mild surprise when he scored in the High-Weight at the Takapuna meeting five weeks ago, is at present spelling at the Auckland Stud Company’s farm at Otahuhu. He will probably make a reappearance at the Rotorua meeting next month. Going to Thames C. Eastwood remained in Auckland at the conclusion of the summer meeting at Ellerslie, and intends to ride at the Thames gathering on Thursday and Saturday. At this fixture last year the Southern jockey piloted two winners. Thames Riders The following riding engagements have been made for the Thames meeting, which opens on Thursday:—H. Wiggins, Trig, Orchus and Crimestor; E. Ludlow, Howick, Welcome Boy, Diamond Queen, Glenstar and Marble King; A. Parsons, Taneriri and Brampton; W. H. Jones, Good Boy, Lillton and Some Lady; and J. Burgess. Bizarro. Not In Form Thursby had conditions to suit him at the recent Ellerslie carnival, but he raced in disappointing fashion and failed to show even a glimpse of his true form. He has had a pretty strenuous campaign since R. E. Brown re- I commissioned him, and his consistency reflects credit upon his trainer, for the Thurnliam gelding’s earnings are well over the four-figure mark. He has been accorded a respite since the local meeting. Promising Yearling The Ellerslie owner-trainer, D. Potter, has quartered at his stables a yearling colt by imported Gainscourt from Clonoe. The youngster has been broken and handled, but owing to a recent cold will not join the active workers for some time yet. I-Ie is an overgrown colt and may take time to mature.
Not Started Ridgemount accepted each day at Stratford but he did not start. A certain section of the public were incensed about the action taken by his connections, but perhaps they were wise in side-stepping Just So. Ridgemount should keep for future reference. He is a good one among- second-class sprinters, and the public will not let him pay too long a price. Disappointments A pair claiming engagement at Thames in War Officer and Brampton provided an interesting tussle over six furlongs. They began very smartly and raced over the first two furlongs in 25 l-os, wound up three in 37, and were on terms at the end in 1.18 3-5 —fair time. It was a very satisfactory winding-up gallop, and indicated that both horses will'strip well in their impending engagements. Neither has been a payable proposition, but they have sufficient ability to encourage their mentors to go on with them, and occasionally they repay on a small scale by notching minor placings. Perhaps it will be their turn at the forthcoming meeting. Cup Candidate There was penty of merit in Taneiri’s win in the Goodwood Handicap at Ellerslie last Thursday, and his prospects in the Goldfields Cup at Thames are being freely discussed. He was partnered with Royal Lover over five furlongs this morning, but the latter showed too much speed in the early stages and was still clear at the end, although the son of Antagonist was overhauling her with every stride in the last furlong. Royal Lover ran her first two furlongs in 25, and the watch showed 1.5. at the post.
