MR. G. H. SELBY A well-known farmer of the Waiuku district, Mr. George Holmes Selby, has died at the age of 56. He was born at Bald Hill, near Waiuku, and was a well-known breeder of Jersey cattle. He is survived by his wife and daughter. MR. H. J. SLADE The death has occur Dargaville of Mr. Henry J. Slade, who for 54 years has been a settler of the Northern Wairoa. Born in Sydney in 1855 he was brought to New Zealand by his parents a year later in the ship Helen Denny, and went to Aratapu in 1875. He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. ] MRS. A. CORKILL Known as the “mother of Aratapu," Mrs. Anetta Corkill has died at Waha-1-oa at the age of 82. Born in Ireland, she came to New Zealand with her parents in the early sixties and was associated with the early days of the sawmilling boom. She was well known for her generosity and for her assistance to afflicted families In time of sickness or hardship. She is survived by three sons and five daughters. DEAN W. HARPER Formerly Dean of Christchurch Cathedral, the Very Rev. Walter Harper died yesterday at Christchurch at the age of 81. Born in Berkshire, England, the fourteenth child of the late Bishop Harper, first Bishop of Christchurch, Dean Harper was educated at Christ’s College and Trinity College, Oxford, graduating in 1872 as a B.A. and as an M.A. in 1873. Two years later he was ordained a priest, and for two years was a curate of Bebington, Cheshire. Coming to New Zealand in 1877, Dean Harper -was appointed curate at Ellesmere, and held the position until 1882, when he became incumbent of St. Michael's, Christchurch, a position he held for 11 years. He was then appointed canon of Christchurch Cathedral, head of the theological department of Christ’s College, principal of College House, and sub-dean of the cathedral. In 1901 he was appointed Dean of Christchurch, retaining the position until 1913, when he retired.
