PINNED UNDER MOTOR

MISHAP NEAR POKENO CAR GOES OVER BANK Three Auckland motorists had a narrow escape from being drowned in five feet of water at Pokeno on Saturday evening, when the car in which they were driving somersaulted into a swamp. Mr. C. W. Cox. of 6 Woodford Road. Mount Eden, with his wife and son. was motoring back to Auckland along the Great South Road. It was raining at the time. Near Pokeno Mr. Cox swerved to avoid another car which was travelling south and he shot on to the edge of the roadway. The action of the car suggested to Mr. Cox that his rear wheel had gone over the edge so he accelerated. The car swung round in the loose metal on the road and shot over the bank into the mud and water below. Mr. Cox was thrown clear, but his wife had been knocked senseless by the blow' when she was thrown against the side of the car. Mr. Cox rescued his wife from water which was waist deep and then his son, who was pinned underneath the seat of the car. Other motorists fortunately came by and assisted Mr. Cox in applying artificial respiration to bring his son. round. Later the injured people were taken to Pokeno and the car, little damaged, was dragged from the swamp.
