Rain Stops Wanganui Tennis Tournament

TWO SEMI-FINAL GAMES FINE MEN’S DOUBLES From Our Own Correspondent. WANGANUI. Today. Lain overnight {spoiled the surface of the courts for today’s games in the North Island lawn tennis tournaments. The thoughtless use of a species of spiked shoes and nets by the players caused further havoc, especially on the back lines, until the committee prohibited their use. The semi-finals of the women’s championship singles gave two unexciting games. Mrs. Adams beat Miss Myers, 7—6, (!—2. Mrs. Melody, who appeared tired and played jaded tennis, was easily disposed of by Miss Nicholls, 6—4, 6—o.

The second semi-final game of the men’s championship doubles was a sparkling exhibition. Angas and Lamp© won from Stedman and Charters, 6 —3, G —3. liampe played splendidly at the net and returned some wonderful shots. At 11.30 a.m. a light drizzle began to fall gradually increasing to rain and play has ceased. STEDMAN BEATEN AUCKLAND’S HOPE GOES UNDER from Our Own Correspondent WANGANUI, Today. Auckland's hope, A. C. Stedman, was defeated yesterday by Charters (Whangarei), when the North Island Lawn Tennis Championships were continued at Wanganui, j Stedman . was below form, and liis | usual severe forehand drive was seldom seen in action. Barkman, G—o, ti—l; Charters and Aliss Whitehead beat Perkins and Aliss Hobson, 6—4, G 3 • Lampe and Miss Alyers beat Shaw and Miss Latham, 7—5. 12—10; Dymond and Aliss Scott beat A. Powdrell and Aliss Whyte o—7.0 —7. 6—4; Rhodes-Williams and Miss Nicholls beat Earle and Aliss Ramsav. 6—l, I—6. 3—3. Play reached an even higher standard than yesterday. On the form disclosed today both Wilson and Stedman are well below their best form. Wilson in particular mis-timed overhead shots. Mrs. Melody and Miss Myers refused to play in the semi-finals of the women's singles because of the failing light and the strenuous play they had had all day. Both played in doubles to assist the management. Miss Nicholls took a spell lasting more than five minutes during her match with Aliss Purcell, at a critical period. This was against the rules. It was argued for Aliss Nicholls that she was ill and needed the rest, but tennis etiquette requires that anyone in this position shall forfeit the match. The longest game of the day was a marathon between Lampe and Aliss Alyers and Shaw and Aliss Latham, the former winning 7—5, 12—10. Practically every game ran to deuce. In the semi-finals of the men's singles Alalfrov took the set with practically no opposition. In the second, RhodesWilliams led 4 —o. Malfroy drew level at the eighth game, but Rhodes-Wil-liams eventually won 6 —4. Alalfroy took the third set after a hard fight, though the scores were 6 —3. Angas beat Charters with ease, attacking his back-hand consistently. The scores, 6—o, 6—3, are a fair indication of the game. Nicholson and Hubble beat Cox and Udy after a thrilling contest. Cox and Udy took the first set 7 —5, and, by their form, looked well in the winning way. The second set was evenly contested, going to Hubble and Nicholson. The latter carried off the deciding set with ease. In the semi-finals Alalfroy and Wilson beat Nicholson and Hubble, 6 —3, G —4. It was not a very exciting game.
