QUICK MARCH

THE QUIET CORNER

(Written for THE SUN by the Rev. Charles Chandler.) CVFF with left foot. Another year has leapt forth out of the womb of time, young and lusty as an eagle. A veritable Pandora-box full of nice surprises for some, and of grave disappointments for others. Men call it nineteen-thirty. In reality it is only a small fraction of time within a vast eternity. .4s brief as it may be, however, the New Year always comes with an inspiration. Like a fresh exercise hook to a boy who has made a hopeless mess of the last, it comes as a grand relief. The old book has been closed and a new one has been opened, so, with a deep resolve to be guided aright, we commence another chapter in our “Tale of Years.” , Some of us arc glad to be farther down the stream. It helps to take us out of sight of those things which are best forgotten. Others * of us find the undertow, or the swiftness of the current carries us too hastily toward the sea. Whereas at first we eddied, now we rush past on an ebbing tide which, despite all our concern, seems to be the master of the situation. Happy are they who are conscious of direction, of guidance and of control: from within as well as from without. Only with such a consciousness can we wring from the future that measure of happiness which we feel that our actions in the past have merited. NEXT WEEK: THE LAST HOLE.
