WORTH WHILE FRIESIANS

Further proof that the Friesian heifer is a profitable producer early in life is provided by the fact that no less than seven two-year-olds (four juniors and three seniors), black and white heifers, have completed records of over 6001 b. fat in tl te last three months. The seven heifers were tested on four different farms, three of which are in the Auckland Province and the .other in Otago, four of the heifers being bred in the Auckland Province and three in Otago. The Piri Land Company’s “Totara” stud at Orini provided three of the Auckland heifers, the Hobson Farm’s stud at Wharepapa one, while Mr. W. T. Gleeson tested an Otago-bred heifer in his “Waipipi” stud at Waiuku, Auckland, and H. North and Sons tested the two Otago heifers in their famous “Rosevale” stud at Omimi. Honours for the highest production fall to the Piri Land Company representative, Totara Sylvia Lass, whose record reads 19,006.11 b. milk and 690.021 b. fat at two years, 276 days. The other Piri Land Company heifers to exceed the 6001 b. mark were Totara

Tehee Dorothea, 15,956.01 b. milk and 631.341 b. fat at 2 years 23S days, and Totara Sylvia Trixy, 17,942.61 b. milk and 606.241 b. fat at 2 years 19S days. Hobson W. Springhill Pontiac, bred and tested by the Hobson Farm, Ltd., made the second best butter-fat record, her figures reading 17,278.51 b. milk and 654.101 b. fat at 2 years 72 days. This heifer, who has been described as the best three-year-old in New Zealand today, is sired by the imported bull, Ensign Pontiac Valdessa Fayne, and her dam is Woodlands Springhill, a daughter of Cliffside Laddie. The fifth heifer to exceed 6001 b fat in the Auckland Province was Rosevale Inka Triumph, 155,6091 b. milk and 639.221 b. fat at 2 years 144 days, who was bred by H. North and Sons, but was purchased by her present owner, W. T. Gleeson, Waiuku, for 1074 guineas about three months before she calved. A most noticeable fact with regard to the above-mentioned records is the very consistent production. Almost without exception the heifers finished their tests as well as they started, while in two cases the finishing month’s figures were in advance of the commencing months.
