CALVES DECLINE AT WESTFIELD SHEEP SALES LIMITED Average ya-dings of stock were offered at Westfield markets yesterday at the first sales of the New Year. Beef cattle attracted the steadiest inquiry and prices were fully equal to late Westfield rates. A noticeable decline, however, took place for calves. Runners ranged from J. 4 15s to £7 a head, in comparison V ith the previous rates of £5 to £lO- - brought £2 2s to £4 10s’ against £2 5s to £5 15s. Baconer pigs realised higher values and porkers sold at late rates. Small < eclines were recorded for weaners slips and large stores, which were slow’ cf sale. Sheep, yarded in smaller numbers, were sold under a restricted demand! l rime and unfinished wethers and prime ewes sold at practically late lates, but lambs were on an easier market at lower prices. P Kidd, Karaka, £l3 Is 7d; 17 from Messrs. Proctor Bros., Orii.i, £l3 Is; 24 from the Waikato, £l3 5s 6d. Sheep were penned to the number of 544, and there was only a limited demand. Values for ewes were lower and wethers were unchanged. Lamb Competition Dull
Lambs were penned in average numbers. Competition was dull and values were lower, lambs selling at from 17s to £1 3s 9d, unfinished, 12s upwards. There was a small yarding of pigs, which sold at late rates. Choppers sold from £2 to £3 ss; heavy and medium baconers £3 6s to £3 16s; light baconers and heavy porkers from £2 12s to £3 3s; medium porkers and light porkers from £2 2s to £2 10s; small and unfinished porkers, £1 15s to £2. Store pigs were penned In large numbers and values were easier. Large stores made £1 5s to £1 .15s; slips. 15s to £1 3s; weaners, 8s to 15s. Calves were penned in small numbers, and were dull of sale. Values were considerably lower on late quotations. Runners made £5 to £7; heavy vealers, £4 to £4 10s; medium, £3 6s to £3 16s: light, £2 10s to £3 3s; smaller, £1 15s to £2 8s; small and fresh, dropped, 7s to £1 12s; rou*h calves, 10s to £l. Ealgety and Company, Limited.—We penned ox beef in average numbers. The quality was well up to standard and last sale values were again recorded. Prime two-year bullocks from the W T aikato soid up to £l3 7s 6d. Extra prime young bullocks on account of Mr. Maurice Harding, Wellington Park, realised £l2 to £l3 15s, the latter pen being purchased by R. and W. Hellaby, Limited. Other bullocks from local fatteners realised £l2 to £l3 ss. Cow and heifer beef came forward in well up to usual numbers. All good sorts sold at well up to late rates, while secondary and plain cattle were slightly easier of sale. Good young cows and heifers from Morrinsville realised £9 15s to £lO 17s, the latter price being for heifers purchased by A. E. Rossiter. Cowa from the Waikato made £8 17s 6d te £9 10s,- and other cows and heifers £7 7s 6d to £8 12s fid. Extra choice ox sold to 42s 1001 b.; choice and prime, 3Ss te 40s; plain and secondary, 33s to 355; prime young cow and heifer, 395; just killable. 29s to 31s.
Easier Values Sheep came forward in average numbers, but competition was restricted, and late values were hardly reached. Extra prime two-tooth wethers on account of J. S. Montgomery realised 25s to 25s 6d and were purchased by the Auckland Meat Company. Prime ewes realised to 21s 6d; prime wethers, from the 'Waikato, 265; two-tooth wethers from Rakino Island, 21s 6d to 24s 3d. Heavy prime "'ethers, woolly, shorn, made 265; medium, 24s 3d: heavy prime ewes, 20s fid; other ewes. 17s 6d. Lambs came forward in fair numbers, \-alues for which were easier than at the previous market. Heavy prime lamb made 21s; medium, 20s; light, 17s 6d to 19s. Calves were penned in lesser numbers and met an easier market, declining in value from the previous sale. Runners sold at £5 to £6 ss; heavy vealers, £4 to £4 10s; medium. £3 to £3 15s; light, £2 2s to £2 15s; rough, 18s to £1 10s. Pigs sold at about late values. Heavy baconers brought £3 12s to £3 18s; medium and light, £3 to £3 10s; heavy porkers. £2 10s to £2 15s; medium and light, £2 2s to £2 Ss. JOHNSONVILLE VALUES Special to THE SUN WELLINGTON, Today. Pennings for most lines of stock at the Johnsonville sale yesterday were smaller than usual, but the values .obtained were similar to those at recent sales. Heavy and medium wethers sold at 25s fid to 2Ss; extra heavy and heavy bullocks, £ls to £l7 2s 6d; cows, medium, to extra heavy, £6 2s 6d to £l2; heavy heifers. £10: ewes, extra heavy, heavy and heavy young, ISs to 22s 3d; lambs, medium, to 19s.
