DEATH OF GENTLEMAN ADVENTURER
COOLGARDIE SMITH DIES Reed. 11.30 a.m. VANCOUVER Thurs. A. Erskine Smith, mining broker, soldier of fortune and gentleman adventurer of three continents, better known by his famous appellation of Coolgardie Smith, died on Wednesday. He earned his sobriquet in the Australian gold diggings and won and lost half a dozen fortunes. He won a light-heavy-weight boxing championship in Johannesburg in the early nineties, and was a pioneer of the Klondike rush. He was born in 1867 in Launceston, Australia, and was a companion adventurer of Frank Slavin, who died a few weeks ago in Vancouver, and Frank Gotch.
