Addington Trotting

HAROLD THORPE’S SURPRISE Bad Day For Backers ETTA COLE’S NARROW DEFEAT Special lo TUE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. IN real holiday weather and before a large attendance the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s summer carnival was concluded today. The track, while somewhat holding when proceedings opened, improved as the day advanced.

Keen racing marked the occasion, and some good performances were recorded during the fixture. Speculation was brisk, the sum of £36,544 being placed through the machine for the day, against £ 33,405 for the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £71,060, compared with £61,836 in 1929, an increase of £9,224. Backers of favourites had a dismal day, only one first selection, Lougli Neagh, winning. Harold Thorpe sprang a surprise in the Park Handicap, defeating the Auckland-owned Sunshower. M. B. Edwards, driver of the winner, had to answer a charge of alleged crossing at the bottom of the straight, but the protest was dismissed. Etta Cole, the Auckland square-gaiter, was at a longer price, and trotting in better fashion, she was only beaten a head. Roi L’Or, Dilnon and Lady Cello were all at good prices. Diinon, winner of the mile saddle, was allowed to pay a false price, as he was the best handicapped horse in the race. Roi L’Or outclassed a great field in the Selwyn Handicap. Starting from the 2.42 mark he put in an electrifying run over the last round and fairly ate the leaders. Jock Bingen ai: Last Great Nelson and Admiral Bingen were the only ones seriously backed in the Progressive Handicap. The favourite went away at a gallop, but did not lose much ground, to settle down well running into the back. By this time Admiral Bingen had made a great run to show the way to Scuttle, Jock Bingen and Great Nelson. Admiral Bingen looked to be going easily half a mile from .home, when he shut off, and soon drifted back. Great Nelson then set out after Jock Bingen, but the latter held his own to win comfortably. Scuttle was five lengths away third, followed by Ukulele Lady, Boneta and Rustle. The winner met trouble on the first day, and then finished close up. Today he gave the favourite no chance of getting within range of him. Only Favourite to Score Lough Neagh and Haydock were at the head of the betting for the Prebbleton Handicap. Lough Neagh stayed on well to beat Baynut by a neck, Ricardo being a length and a-half away third, just in front of Morning Sun, Blue Glen, Warepa and Mac Dillon. Lough Neagh is a very unreliable horse at the

start of his races, but once on the journev he usually takes a lot of heading. Mac Dillon and Warepa showed a lot of speed in the early part, but faded out at the business end. At a Big Price

Lindbergh £1,164, Athalone £795, and the Sunshower-Jean McElwyn bracket, £6901, were the best backed for the Park Handicap, while Harold Thorpe carried only £3lO. Sunshower attempted to win all the way but after leading into the straight, she gave way to Harold Thorpe, and although R. B. Berry brought her on the outside again, she could not reach Harold Thorpe, and met defeat by threequarters of a length. Lindbergh, after losing a lot of ground at the outset, showed a torrent of speed, and got to within three lengths of Sunshower at the iinish. Athalone, who was pocketed almost throughout, finished on very fast into fourth place, and with a better run would have been in the dividends. Jean McElwyn ran a good race, and the best of the others was Harvest Child. . Harold Tliorpe is trained at New Brighton by his owner, E. It. Husband, and was driven by his old trainer, M. B. Edwards, who thoroughly understands him. Maiwhariti broke rounding the first turn, and King Pointer was slow away. A Poor Contest Kid Logan, Denver’s Loll and Wakataua were the public selections for the Middleton Handicap, a. two-mile saddle event. The favourite lost something like four seconds at the start, but once she. got going, put in a fast run and held a. good lead with half a mile to L: o. Here she started to tire, and Wakataua passed her. Once in line lor homo Wakataua drew out. and Denver’s Doll passed Kid Logan, only to break and lose her chance of paying a dividend. The others, headed by Awaiti. were a tired lot as the line was crossed. Anon fell m the back the second time round, and her rider, E Schofield, was removed to the hospital suffering from minor injuries. A Close Finish Etta Cole trotted solidly throughout the Hornby Handicap. She was ready to go to a break when tackled by Leu Wood in the straight, and Edwards had to be content in keeping her to her gait and she was beaten into second Place. Early in the proceedings, Audominion. Nelson Boy and Bingen Starr were in the van. The last-named broke with a round to go, and the others were done with a long way from home, John Mauritius, who was elected a good favourite, was well P’aced throughout to finish up fast in thud

position. Bonnie Belmont held the measure of the others. Brilliant Roi L’Or In a good betting race Terence Dillon was better backed than the Jean McElwyn-Dundas Boy bracket in the Selwyn Handicap. It was a great race until half a mile from home, where Roi L’Or made his run, and rapidly gathering the field he went on to score

comfortably from Billy Sea and Dundas Boy. Zenith put a good break on the field early, but tired three furlongs from home, and could only finish fourth. Others that had every chance and failed to go the pace were Glenelg and Harvest Child. Dundas Boy put in a burst in the straight, but otherwise his effort was not noted for its dash. The favourite never got near the leaders. At False Figure Dilnon proved himself a class above the mile saddle opposition. The best handicapped horse in the race, he was allowed to pay a false price. Avonwood went out to set a brisk pace, and with half a mile to go, he looked to be doing his work very comfortably. Dilnon was lying in fifth position at this stage, and when asked for his best he came away to beat Avonwood comfortably by a length. Laplander, who lost ground at the start, was four lengths away third. Horotane, Great Triumph and Sylvie. Logan raced below expectations, after having good runs throughout. Lady Cello Scores F. G. Holmes’s pair, Trimmer and Golden Bubbles, wound up hot favourites for the final handicap, but both raced disappointingly. Lady Cello was not well placed early, but she unwound a fine burst of speed, to assume command by the time the home lane was reached. Here Jolly Chimes and Granite City challenged her strongly, but she stayed on admirably to win by a neck, the same distance separating Jolly Chimes and Granite City. The next to finish were Talent and Glenelg. Omaha was out in front early, only to

fade out with a few furlongs covered, and Neerson and Sunshower were beaten at three furlongs.
