A Fitting Finale

REAL SUMMER AT ELLERSLIE Racing Carnival Concludes WARM, sunny weather, and thrills such as racing only tan offer, was enjoyed to the full by a crowd of 21.500 at Ellerslie yesterday, the final day of the Auckland Racing Club's summer carnival, which was brought to a most happy conclusion. The four days’ racing attracted great crowds, the attendances being 38,000 on Boxing Day, 15,000 on Monday, 1(5.500 on Wednesday (when atrocious weather was experienced), and with yesterday’s crowd the total number that passed through the turnstiles'was 91.000, an average of 22.750 a day. Small wonder that the Auckland Racing Club stands alone as the premier sporting body of the Dominion.

One can say with an unparalleled degree of confidence that the meeting which ended in a blaze of colour —the women yesterday had their one and only chance of parading the latest fashions, and they certainly made the most of it —was one of the most successful ever held by the A.R.C. The racing attracted the best thoroughbreds in commission, and the result was a sequence of stirring struggles which makes Ellerslie such a fascinating centre for sportsmen from all over the Dominion. Throughout the whole fixture there was not the slightest hitch in the management, everything going off with a swing so typical of Ellerslie and at once instilling the confidence so necessary. In Mr. W. S. Spence as its secretary the A.R.C. has a most capable official, endowed with wonderful organising ability, so that, backed up by an experienced executive and a loyal, staff, it is not altogether remarkable that the prestige of the Auckland Racing Club is maintained on the highest pinnacle. The Totalisator But for the disastrous weather experienced on New Year’s Day a greater increase in totalisator turnover would have been recorded, but as it was, the figures on this occasion were no less than £ 33,387 h above those for the last summer meeting. Despite the serious drop on Wednesday of over £24,000, the £33,3874 increase on the four days is really remarkable, representing as it does a. rise of nearly 10 per cent. The following figures indicate the sums handled during the two last summer meetings

A total increase of £33,3872. Reviewing those figures, one can say that the position in Auckland appears to b'e considerably better than it was 12 months ago, for is it not claimed for the totalisator that it is a sure barometer of the financial situation ? The sport yesterday was exciting. There was a very tight finish in that popular event, the Royal Stakes, the little-fancied Greenaway defeating the two best-backed runners, Cylinder and Hunting Cry. The latter failed to record his fourth win at the meeting by two heads only. King’s Guard, too, failed in this direction, but he made a most gallant effort, and he went down to Eiysianor with colours nailed to the mast. The Grandstand Handicap was a spectacular contest, Historic winning at long odds from Lucy Rose and Prodice. Taneriri, too, was at a long price in the Goodwood Handicap, King Emerald and Antique being close behind him. Notes on the racing and details of results follow: Goodwood Handicap Taneriri won the opening event and paid a dividend in the vicinity of a score. Hyde Park, £1,258, Merry Mint, £1,037, and King Emerald, £930, were the best backed, Taneriri, £347, being only mildly supported. Hyde Park had his chance extinguished at the start, the order out being Imperial Prince, Panther, Hakanoa, King Emerald, Taneriri, Prince Vai, Flying

Prince, Lady’s Boy, Unoco, Merry Mint and Le Choucas. Thursby tailing off earls’. Running to the five Taneriri ran to the front from Imperial Prince, Panther, Hakanoa, King Emerald, Lady’s Boy, Flying Prince, Unoco, Prince Val and Merry Mint. Crossing the top Panther ran up to Taneriri and there was nothing between them at the turn for home, the pair being attended by Imperial Prince, Flying Prince. Hakanoa, King Emerald, Flying Juliet and Prince Val. Taneriri hung on in the run home to win by a neck from King Emerald, with the unlucky Antique half a length back third Flying Juliet was. fourth, and then came Hakanoa, Merry Mint, King Midas, Panther, Lady’s Boy, Flying Prince, Prince Val and Hyde Park. Sylvia Handicap

Eight started in the two-year-old race, Awaken £2.690 being a warm favourite over Sight Draft £1.575, Tremetus £1,213 and Bells of Shandon £1,005. Awaken got the jump out and was followed from the barrier by Betterment, Sight Draft, Set Fair, Tremetus and Caviare. At the halfmile Bells of Shandon, Set Fair, Awaken, Caviare, Betterment and Tremetus was the order. Set Fair and Bells of Shandon turned for home on terms ahead of Sight Draft, Awaken, Betterment, Tremetus and Caviare, Once in line Awaken drew out and won comfortably by a length and a-half from Bells of Shandon, Betterment being three-parts of a length back, just in front of Sight Draft. Set Fair was fifth and then came, a long way back, Tremetus. Trickle and Caviare. Grandstand Handicap

Historic showed an improvement on his previous form at the meeting when he scored in the Grandstand Handicap, in which he was at a double figure price, carrying only £576 on the machine. Lucy Rose, who acted as runner-up. was entrusted with £S2S, the favourites being Goshawk £3,475 and Vertigern £2,056, both of which failed badly. Amor was first to show out and led past the stands from Corinax, Goshawk, Lucy Rose, Prodice, Vertigern, Historic, Seatoun, Spearmiss and High Pitch. Along the back Goshawk went to the lead from Amor, Lucy Rose, Vertigern, Prodice, Corinax, High Pitch and Historic, and when, the five furlongs disc was reached High Pitch had taken charge. At this stage Lucy Rose and Amor were together just behind the leader, with Goshawk, Prodice and Corinax handy. Lucy Rose was slightly in advance of Corinax as the home turn was negotiated. with High Pitch, Prodice, His-

toric and Amor close up, and in a desperate finish Historic got up to beat Lucy Rose by a neck, with Prodice a similar distance away third and High Pitch fourth. Then came Corinax, Goshawk, Seatown. Amor, Vertigern, and Spearmiss. The winner paid double figures. Auckland Hurdles King’s Guard was expected to further add to his record in the Auckland Hurdles, and was elected favourite with £1,685, being closely followed by Eiysianor £1,555, and Importer £1,382. The top-weight made a gallant effort to win his fourth successive hurdle event at the meeting, but after being slightly interfered with at the final obstacle, when Prince Lu fell, was beaten home by Eiysianor. Princo Lu, as usual, went to the front and led over the initial jump from Pangolin, Rahepoto and Eiysianor. Pangolin fell at the next obstacle, and Serang at the next, Prince Lu leading past the stands five lengths clear of Rahepoto and Mashoor, followed by Eiysianor, Importer, Master Roley, Kawini and King’s Guard. Along the back Eiysianor Went after the leader, and Rahepoto, Mashoor, Importer, Kawini, Master Roley and King’s Guard were also prominent. At the second last fence Importer crashed and Prince Lu led into the straight from Eiysianor and King’s Guard, who was moving up fast. The last hurdle proved the downfall of Prince Lu, and he slightly checked the favourite, who made a big effort to overhaul Eiysianor in the run home, but failed by one and a-half lengths. Kawini was eight lengths back third, followed at similar intervals by Rahepoto, Mashoor and Glenotus. Royal Stakes Hunting Cry was elected a good favourite for the 35th Royal Stakes, being entrusted with £2,900, while Cylinder £2,318 was second choice. The winner was the Mason representative, who carried only £Bl9 and paid a remunerative price. The winner was ridden by T. Green, who scored his fourth consecutive success in this event. From a level dispatch, Cylinder was first to show out from Hunting Cry, Biddy’s Boy and Tenterden, who were in close formation, with Dunraven, Eaglet and Greenaway following in a bunch. At the half mile, Tenterden took charge from Biddy’s Boy, Cylinder and the favourite, but Hunting Cry held a slight advantage as the field turned for home, Tenterden and Cylinder being on terms, followed by Dunraven, Biddy’s Boy, Eaglet and Greenaway. Inside the distance Cydinder tackled the top-weight, and the pair were fighting out a hard battle when Greenaway flashed up on the outer to win by a neck from Cylinder, with Hunting Cry a head away third. Eaglet was fourth and then came Tenterden, Biddy’s Boy and Dunraven. Sectional times were: furlong 14, two furlongs, 25 2-5, three furlongs 37 2-5, full journey 1.15 2-5. Clifford Plate

Backers went solidly for H. Gray’s mount, Pegaway, £3,786, in the Clifford Plate, Concentrate (£1,660) being next in order on the machine, and this pair fought out a great finish, the favourite scoring. As the members’ stand was reached, Pegaway, Concentrate, and Toxeuma were in line, Count Cavottr following closely. When the back stretch was .entered, the favourite forged ahead from Toxeuma, Concentrate, and Count Cavour, and there was no change in position till the home bend was negotiated, where Toxeuma closed on the leader, and Concentrate moved forward. Concentrate had the advantage 150 yards from the box, but vigorous horsemanship by Gray got the favourite up to beat the Cup winner by a head, with Toxeuma a length away third. Count Cavour was five lengths back. Sectional times were: Two furlongs, 28: four, 54 4-5; six, 1.21 3-5. The last half-mile registered 48 3-5, and the full journey 2.10 1-5. Bowen Handicap Cimabue £2,412, was a solid fancy for the Bowen Handicap, Knightlike £1,908, being next in demand, with the eventual winner, Leitrim, £1,215, at a useful price. Valuation dwelt at the start, and Leitrim led out smartly from Awarere, Knightlike, .Great Star, Cimabue and Gold Money. At the half-mile Great Star was on terras with Leitrim at the head of a bunch which comprised Awarere, Knightlike, Valuation, Gold Money and Cimabue. The last-named moved up approaching the straight, and was just behind Leitrim and Great Star as the turn was negotiated, with Gold Money, Awarere and Knightlike also in the firing line. Inside the distance Gold Money made her effort, and looked a likely winner, but stopped quickly, and

Leitrim went on to win by a length from Awarere, who was a head in front of the favourite. Gold Money was a neck away fourth, and then followed Knightlike, Great Star. White Wings and Valuation (who was very unlucky). Grey Handicap Richfield £3,854 was a hot pot in the final event, carrying more than twice as much as the second fancy, Archieval £1,661. Backers picked them correctly. Thxirnus was hopelessly left at the start, and Sports King and Tuku were also sloxv off the mark. When they had quite settled down Red Lion, Archieval, Relation, Richfield, Prince of Orange, Nassau Lady and Gay Cockade were prominent, but at the end of two and a-half furlongs Archieval and Relation were making the pace from Richfield, Gay Cockade, Red Lion, Tuku, Nassau Lady and Spring Abbey. The firstmentioned pair turned for home just ahead of a bunch comprising Gay Cockade, Richfield, Nassau Lady, Tuku, Spring Abbey and Prince of Orange. At the distance the favourite began to forge ahead, and from this out it wasn’t a race, Richfield winning by about four lengths. Archieval was two lengths in front of Prince of Orange, and the unlucky Tuku fourth. Then came Nassau Lady, Day Lass, Spring Abbey, Red Lion, Gay Cockade, Micrometer, Thurnus and Llyn Dhu. Otairi Improves on Marton Cup Form

ASPIRING LEADS THE SPRINTERS FAVOURITES’ BAD DAY Special to TIIB SI X MARTON, Thursday. The Marton summer meeting was concluded today in beautiful weather. There was a good attendance*and the track was in good order. For the day the totalisator handled £21.757. compared with £21,548 on the second day last rear. For the meeting the total was £49,743, against, £51,210. Junction Plate The day opened disastrously for punters. Equitant (£1,982) was backed as unbeatable in the Junction Plate, Habit (£94S) and Just an Idea (.£408) being the only other runners to be accorded anything approaching substantial support. Equitant and Habit, from the inner positions at the barrier, were the smartest to begin and they set too merry a pace for the others. Catherine of Aragon, Bay Acre, Wee Acre and Sea Scout being their nearest attendants as they raced across the top. Just an Idea moved up at the entrance, but Equitant and Habit were still well clear at the distance. Equitant promised to carry her backers through, but Habit put in a sustained run and wore the filly down to win by a neck, with a gap of some four lengths to Just an Idea. At further intervals came Quinola. Catherine ot‘ Aragon, Bay Acre, Wee Acre and Emerald Abbey. Had Equitant been allowed to run along more she would have won. Second Hurdles In the Second Hack Hurdles the first day’s winner. Aurora Borealis (£974), wound up favourite from Call Again (£892), with Vinella and Skyrider also strongly supported. However, the favourite was fated to be again beaten into second place, Vinella beating her home by a narrow margin, with Skyrider third, Awapuni thus supplying the first three Borsalene, as on the first day. went out to make the pace from Vinella, Call Again and Skyrider, and they raced through the straight in that order, Aurora Borealis being in the rear. Four Acres ran up going away from home to join Borsalene in the van, while rounding the top Skyrider and Aurora Borealis both improved their positions. At the penultimate fence Vinella and Skyrider both outjumped the two leaders and they came through to take charge and lead into the straight, where Aurora Borealis put in an appearance. A good race ensued between them from the distance, Vinella holding to the rails to win by a neck from Aurora Borealis (who was wide out), with Skyrider a length back. There was a gap to Borsalene, with an increasing margin to Call Again, with Four Acres last. Aurora Borealis was just a little unlucky. Aldworth Stakes The principal handicap event of the day, the Aldworth Stakes, saw First Acre (£759) wind up favourite from Silver Paper (£611) and Otairi (£536), and the trio filled the placing’s, although they finished in reversed order. First Acre, whq._ had begun smartly, gave way to Otairi going into the baci-. with Avro, Keddar and Silver Paper in attendance. Approaching the halfmile peg Hoylake moved round his field to join Keddar, with First Acre, Avro and Silver Paper racing in close attendance. Otairi was still clear as they turned into the straight, with Hoylake, Avro and First Acre handy, while Silver Paper was coming up. In the run to the judge’s box Otairi strode on to win nicely by a length and a-half from Silver Paper, who was half a length clear of First Acre. There was a gap to Hoylake, with Avro and Keddar next.

Otairi scored really well, and even with a better passage Silver Paper would not have got to him. Hoylake ran very poorly, and Keddar simply failed completely. Electric Hack A really bad start spoiled the Electric Handicap. Statuary (£645) and Limosin (£627) dominated the betting. Fine Acre and Rich Harvest were among the sufferers at the barrier and within a furlong the field was strung out, Patearoa being out in front from Marica, Glenrossie, Warfille, Spearform, Goldlike and Limosin. There was little change right to the straight entrance, where Glenrossie and Pateoroa drew away, with Limosin in pursuit, and the late challenger and Pateoroa steadily drew clear of Glenrossie, and a great battle between the pair saw Limosin prevail by a head, with Glenrossie two lengths back, the last-named being four lengths clear of Warfille. . Statuary did well to get up to finish fifth, with Phastar, and with a decent dispatch would have won. Goldlike and Valma were next.. Telegraph Handicap Aspiring easily won the Telegraph Handicap, The Raider, Freehold and Aspiring raced in line to the straight, Freehold being on the rails and the favourite on the outside. Once straightened out for home Aspiring drew away from Freehold to win by a length and a-half. with Broad Acre a similar distance back, the lastnamed having come through on the rails to beat The Raider home. Aspiring was too solid for Freehold. In the Ladies’ Bracelet, Brigadier

Bill and Bourgeois led Paiiu and Red Lane going out of the straight, but Palm was taken to the front along tlu» back from Bourgeois. Brigadier Bill and Red Lane, with Some Red ahead of Imperial Spark. The rider of tlui last-named commenced his run immediately on straightening out, buj Pahu responded to pressure to coma again and win by a neck, with Red Lane five lengths behind Imperial Spark. Brigadier Bill was fourth, with Reull and Some Red next. The winner was well ridden by Mr* Morris, whose horsemanship was far superior to that of the other riders. 1 Turakina Handicap Five runners went to the post in the Turakina Handicap. The public did not hesitate to install High Falutiir* (£1,365) a solid favourite from Second Thought (£447) and Briar Root ( £ 395 >. Second Thought and Briar Root were first to move, but before a furlong had been travelled Malayan had gene to the front to pilot the othee pair, with High Fa lutin’ bringing up the rear. Roi Dr Val made a forward move crossing the top, but ran shade wide turning into the straight and High Falutin* came through inside him to race past the others and go on to win without being pushed b£ three lengths, Malayan holding off Second Thought to take second money by a neck. There was a gap to Briar Root. Malayan improved, but had n<s chance with High Falutin’.
