COMMENT ON LABOUR PEERAGES SUPPORT IN UPPER HOUSE United I*. A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 11.20 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. The “Manchester Guardian” com-, ments: —Mr. Ramsay MacDonald has again shown strict economy, even parsimony, in creating Labour supporters to the peerage. He only appointed three in 1924, Lord Arnold, Lord Olivier and Lord Thomson. This year he has limited political peerages to two. one of whom is Mr. Arthur Ponsonbv, Under-Secretary for the Dominions, whose Parliamentary style will suit the Lords better than the Commons, and who is a man obviously intended to strengthen Labour’s debating force in the Upper House. LIGHT LIST MANY WOMEN HONOURED BARONY FOR MR. PONSONBY LONDON, Tuesday. Among the New Year honours are the following: BARONY Mr. Arthur Ponsonby, Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, and well-known writer and speaker on Labour’s policy. KNIGHTHOODS Dr. Granville Bantock, Professor of Music, Birmingham University, since 1908. Lieutenant-Colonel H. W. G. Cole, director of the Exhibitions Section, Department of Overseas Trade. Many women are honoured, Including Lady Bailey and Miss Maude Royden, assistant preacher at the City Temple. Miss Rose Rosenberg, personal secretary to the Prime Minister, Mr. MacDonald, Is given the C.8.E.; Miss Elsie Hughes, secretary to Lord Dawson, is given the M.8.E., for services in the King’s illness. Mr. Srinivasa Sastri is made a Companion of Honour, for his eminent services in Indian affairs. AUSTRALIAN AWARDS FOUR NEW KNIGHTS NOTED LEGAL AUTHORITY SYDNEY, Wednesday. The New Year honours included the following: ORDER OF ST. MICHAEL AND ST. GEORGE K.C.M.G. Professor John Beverley Pedan, K.C., President of the New South Wales Legislative Council, and Dean of the Faculty of Law in Sydney University. t C.M.G. Waiter David Loveridge, president of the Sydney Harbour Trust. KNIGHTS BACHELOR—K.B. Mr. Justice James Blair, Chief Justice of Queensland. Mr. R. Eccles Snowden, Agent-General for the Tasmanian Government in England. ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE K.B.E. Dr. Stanley Argyle, who was Chief Secretary in the last Victorian Ministry. C.B.E. Miss Sibelia Macarthur Onslow, who belongs to one of the oldest Australian pioneering families. She is a prominent Welfare and Red Cross worker.
