THE SPANISH TONGUE

Sir,— Our nearest continental neighbours, with the exception of the Australians, speak Spanish almost universally. Why not teach our youngsters this language in the schools? I was informed by the consul of one of the great South American Republics the other day that one of the greatest barriers to trade between South America and New Zealand is the language difficulty. Ships bring phosphates from South America to New Zealand, but return with very little to increase New Zealand exports. The South Americans hate the United States like poison, and are quite willing to import from any other country rather than from the States. And it has to be remembered that the South of America is potentially far more ■wealthy than the North. Therefore, why not do something to break down the language barrier and open up further avenues of trade with South America ? NO MANANA.
