TOOK MATE’S CHEQUE
THEFT FROM WORKER ON RELIEF JOB GAOL WITHOUT OPTION Entrusted with a cheque by a mate with whom he was on relief work at Clevedon, Arthur Morey disappeared until he was arrested and brought before Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Morey, a labourer, aged 43, admitted the theft of a cheque for £7 12s 3d from John Allan on December 2. Chief-Detective Hammond said that Allan and accused had been on relief work together at Clevedon. Accused had been coming to town and his mate gave him the cheque to cash and buy one or two small articles. That was the last that had been seen of Morey. He had spent the money and it was difficult to see how he could make restitution. “In 1925 this man was up on two or three charges,” added the chief-detective. “So he stole his mate’s money, did fie,” said the magistrate imposing the term of imprisonment.
