YOUNG MAN’S CHEEKY THEFT SEEN BEHIND COUNTER Sneaking behind the counter o£ a shop yesterday, Christopher Daly took money from the till. While he was there a customer came in. He managed to allay any suspicions the visitor might have had, but was trapped by a small girl. Daly, a labourer. aged 21, was charged at the Police Court this morning with stealing a pound of chocolate valued at 2s and £1 2s in money from Emily Croton yesterday. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that accused had entered the shop at 5.50 p.m. Finding nobody there, he had slipped behind the counter ai d opened the till. “To show his impudence,” said the sub inspector, “while he was there a customer came and he told them that the woman in char ge would be out in a moment. The alarm was given by a little girl and Daly was caught by the proprietor of the shop. He was convicted and discharged on a charge of theft at Opunake on December 16 and that is all the records show against him.” Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.. ordered that I Daly be remanded for a week so that I ihe probation officer could prepare a I report upon him. In the meantime, I he is to be kept apart from other I prisoners. I_— -
