Young Motor-Cyclist Killed in Collision
MOUNT ALBERT SMASH COMPANION INJURED The death in the Auckland Hospital on New Year’s Eve of Arnold Arthur McKee, .aged 18, followed a collision between a motor-cycle i and a baker’s delivery van on the afternoon of the same day. McKee was riding the cycle. His companion, who was on the pillion seat, was thrown heavily to the •round, but his condition is not serious. McKee, carrying Robert Buchanan. : sued 14, as a passenger, collided with a motor-van on the intersection of j Mount Albert and Mountain Roads, lie j was; tbe only son of Mrs. G. McKee, ! of Carrington Road, Point Chevalier. Buchanan is the son of Mrs. C. Buchanan, 11 St. Alban’s Avenue. Mount Eden. The collision occurred when the ■van. which was driven by Mr. Arthur Barker, of 33 Mount Albert Road, turned to the right from Mount Albert Road to enter Mountain Road. McKee, who was in the saddle, was thrown over the handlebars and directly against the side of the van. Buchanan was also thrown from the machine, falling heavily on the roadway. A resident and the driver of the van attended to the youths until the arrival of Dr. J. A. Paterson, who had been immediately summoned. McKee was unconscious and Buchanan, who was conscious, was suffering considerable pain. On arrival at the hospital McKee was found to be suffering from fractures of the right arm and left leg and severe shock. Buchanan had received head injuries. The delivery van. which is owned by Mr. C. Davis, baker, of 27 New North Road, was damaged extensively, the near side running board and front mudguard being crumpled, and a hole 'orn in the bodywork. The motorcycle was also damaged, the front portion being almost entirely wrecked. OPENING OF INQUEST An inquest concerning the death of Arnold Arthur McKee was opened before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, this morning, and adjourned after evidence °f identification had been given by Arnold Arnott Snowden, an uncle. Mr. Snowden, a carrier, of Seaview Terrace, Mount Albert, said that MeKee was a motor-mechanic, who had been lately unemployed. He was a skilful rider, and owned a motor-cycle. The one he was riding when the accident occurred was one he had borrowed from a friend.
