WELCOME TO 1930
New Year’s Eve’s Joyous Spirit OLD YEAR PASSES Carnival paper hats and ludicrous masks of all shapes and designs were worn by hundreds of revellers who paraded the streets on New Year’s Eve. The spirit of the season was more boisterously evident than a week previously, and the drizzling rain could not dampen the jubilant spirits of the crowd. Armed with squeakers and trumpets, and, in fact, anything that would create a carnival noise, hundreds of joyous young people pursued a rowdy way up and down Queen Street until toward midnight when the crowd started to assemble near the Ferry Buildings intent on bidding farewell to the old year and greeting the new. The shrieking of sirens, hooting of horns, the roar of exploding fireworks and cheering of a surging throng, marked the dying of tile old and birth of the new year. Some of the more ardent spirits engaged in time-honoured horse-play of rocking trams and mQtor-ears to the alarm of the passengers. Radio helped to brighten the dying year. Music was broadcast by station IYA and at midnight the carnival noise was relayed over the air for the benefit of listeners.
