J.J.A.—Could you tell me anything about a back spitting from the carburettor of an old Ford truck which takes place usually when on the flat?

Your trouble does not appear to be consistent with any one particular effect but if there is a ‘'popping back” in the carburettor on the level, it usually indicates that the mixture is too lean, or els 6 that the timing is incorrect. As the same effect is experienced in running downhill with the ignition oft it would point to an excessive amount of carbon in the combustion chamber; but this would also have the effect of causing free ignition. Under the circumstances, take the car to a competent Ford mechanic, when no doubt a satisfactory diagnosis will be quickly made.

K.F. —I have had a little trouble recently with oil leaking through the

overcome oil leaking from the differentia! I suggest the following ?^ct kS: T- 15 , U is P oss -ble that thf lock-nut is loose on universal joint flange; tighten nut to prevent endfloat in pinion shaft. (2) FeU washer may be worn or in a hardened condition; renew felt washer. (3) Oil slinger may be rubbing against thrust-bearing causing bearing to float; ease off inner sleeve. (4.1 It is possible that there is too much oil in differential; three pints are sufficient. To adjust differential, drive pinion; slacken off outer sleeve. If gears are noisy on the pull move inward centre sleeve. If gears are noisy on the coast, move outward centre Sleeve. One notch varies backlash -OOlin. Tighten out sleeve an d luck in position.
