| CAREFUL PACKING NECESSARY ■ The pleasure of any holiday can be heightened and its costs decreased by a judicious resort .to picnic meals, always provided that the weather is congenial. A picnic meal need never be uncomfortable. The menu and the apparatus are primarily a matter for the ladj' of the house. If she fails to display taste and imagination in such duties, mere man should just for once undertake the catering, and buy a really dainty picnic lunch from one of the good shops; she will not miss the lesson. But she will seldom tackle the packing question in really statesmanlike fashion without male assistance. Her idea of packing usually centres round a number of abominable paper bags or a perfectly impossible basket. Packing is a simple matter on twoseaters, or on four-seaters carrying only half a crew, though in the boot of a two-seater comestibles must be carefully fended away from tools and oil and grease; they should be jammed in position. In a crowded tourer packing is quite another matter. There are two comfortable plans. One is to mount the luncheon basket or case on the running board by means of special cleats and straps, where it will be perfectly safe and out of everybody’s way. Just in case we get blistering weather, pack it on the side of the car which will generally be shaded from the sun during any given run.
