TRANSPORT POLL
MR. EDWARD MORTON ELECTED SUBSTANTIAL MAJORITY Mayor of Onehuaga and brother of Mr. F. S. Morton, who recently resigned his position on the Auckland Transport Board, Mr. Edward Morton will occupy the vacancy. Mr. Morton secured a large majority over the other two candidates in the by-election held throughout yesterdayon the vacancy. The polling finished at 6 p.m. Voting details were: E. Morton (Onehunga) .. 402 G. E. Tansley (Mt. Roskill) . . 23S R. G. Clark (One Tree Hill} 223 Mr. Morton's majority' . . . . 164 In spite of the public Interest in transport problems, the polling was extremely light. This was due to the election being conducted in a holiday period. Only 7.4 per cent, of the 11,741 persons qualified to vote went to the poll. Greatest interest was shown in Mount Roskill, with an 8.7 per cent, vote; the poll was only 2.1 per cent, in Mount Wellington Road District. District voting returns were:
The informal votes numbered only four and the number of votes still to arrive numbered five. These votes were all by declaration. Each district having a candidate, Onehunga, Mount Roskill and One Tree Hill, supported the candidate in the main. The official count was made today. Mr. W. St. J. Clarke, secretary to the Transport Board, was the returning officer. The next meeting of the board will be in the first week in February.
