THE VERY LATEST IN SUMMER FROCKS AND HATS were seen at Ellerslie yesterday, when perfect weather favoured the opening of the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival. The pictures show, top left: The end of a promising jumper. Catonian, ridden by T. Williams, fell at the third fence in the Ponsonby Hurdles and broke a leg. The horse, which was owned by Mrs. S. L. Parsons, of Wanganui, was subsequently destroyed. Top right: Mild surprise in the Summer Cup. The little-fancied Royal Doulton (K. Voitre) defeated the favourite, Pegaway (H. Gray), with Amor (behind Pegaway) third. Star Stranger, who did not get in the picture, was wide out, fourth, and Vertigern, on the rails, fifth.
SYDNEY SHARK HORROR.—William Oakley, a youth aged 17. was attacked by a 1 2 - f o ot shark near the bald Rock ferry wharf, shown above, on December 26 Although in evident agony, he swam to the launch seen in the picture, but died almost immediately from his terrible injuries.
