Big Figures

AUCKLAND R.C. TOTALISATOR Successful Second Day THE remarkable success of the first two days of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting is reflected in the n onderful totalisator turnover. There was another lartre increase on the second day yesterday, and this raised the advance to £53,397 10s. or an increase of about 38 per cent, on the first two days of the same meeting twelve months ago. This is ample evidence of the popularity of the A.R.C.. °as well as an indication that times are better in the money

The weather on Boxing Bay for the opening of the A.R.C. four-day carnival was threatening, and for the second day yesterday there was a welcome change for the better, real summer conditions prevailing. There was a large attendance, the official figures being 15.000, making a total of 53,000 for Boxing Bay and yesterday. The following table indicates the totalisator investments for the two days of this and the preceding summer meetings, and also shows the big increases: In--1928. 1929. crease. £ £ £ First day .. 95.783 J 121,417 25,633 i Second day. 44,311 72,075 27.764' Totals . So for the two days the electric totalisator has put through £193,492. For the four days of the last summer meeting the total was £319,048 10s, and given fine weather tomorrow, New Year’s Bay, it is quite on the cards that the figures will be close to those for the previous four days. The meeting concludes on Thursday. Excellent Racing Another series of spirited contests was witnessed yesterday. Royal Boulton, looking all the better for her run the first day, sprang a mild surprise when she led a class field home in the Summer Cup, in which she was admirably ridden by the apprentice, K. Voitre. Pegaway and Amor were close up in the other places. Knightlike and Leitrim, two recently promoted hacks, had the finish of the sprint to themselves, the former winning by a head, with Polyxena third. .Hunting Cry defeated Toxeuma by a neck in the King’s Plate, but it was a decisive victory and indicates that Eaglet will have to be at her best to beat him in tomorrow’s £3,000 Derby contest. This, and the A.R.C. Handicap, will be the big attractions at Hllerslio tomorrow. Once again a good word must be said for the efficiency displayed in the general management. Notes on yesterday’s racing and details of results follow. Fergusson Handicap Imperial Prince, paying a great price, won the Fergusson Handicap, from the hot favourite, Richfield. The latter carried £2,664, with Greenaway £1,434 second choice, Imperial Prince £528 being at nearly double figures. Relation and Indolent were slow away, Spring Abbey going out smartly from Greenaway, Imperial Prince, Tuku, Luminary, Richfield and Always, the last-named getting knocked back badly passing the six. At the five Relation was in front from Tuku, this pair being clear of Luminary, with Q Greenaway, [ndolent, Richfield, Spring Abbey, Imperial Prince. Llyn Dhu, Snowplane and Always next. Tuku was just in advance of Relation at the home turn, with Richfield next, being followed by Luminary, Llyn Dhu, Imperial Prince, Indolent, Spring Abbey and Always. At the distance the favourite was in charge, but he then hung out badly. Imperial Prince challenged and was going strongly a head in front of Richfield at the post. Greenaway was two lengths back third, and Luminary and Tuku were together next, following being Llyn Bhu, Always, Spring Abbey, Indolent, Relation, Snowplane and Some Lady. King's Plate It was notf until the totalisator had closed that Hunting Cry went out for i his preliminary. Bespite this he was | a good favourite with £l.llß, and j Toxeuma second choice, with £BSO, I Historic, the only other runner, being at a good price. Toxeuma went out to make the pace, the other pair following him together a couple of lengths back. Toxeuma led into the straight a length and a-half in front of Hunting Cry, Historic being three lengths back. Hunting Cry and Toxeuma were on terms at the distance, and in a spirited finish Hunting Cry obtained a neck decision, Historic being five lengths away. Ponsonby Hurdles Pangolin £1,963 was the first choice with speculators, but King’s Guard £1.685 was also well supported, while Prince Lu £941 was also fancied. Catonian and Prince Lu went out in front and set a hot pace for half a mile, being well clear of Pangolin and Clockwork, who were well in advance of the remainder. At the third fence Catonian came to grief, and Prince Lu led past the stand from Pangolin, Clockwork, Rahepoto, King’s Guard, Importer and Lady Spalpeen (who was badly interfered with when Catonian fell). At the five furlongs Prince Lu was still in command from King’s ‘ Guard and Pangolin, after whom came Clockwork and Importer. Crossing the top King’s Guard moved up and was in front at the home turn, followed by Prince Lu, Pangolin and Importer. King’s Guard was never troubled to win easily by seven lengths from Prince Lu, with Importer three lengths back, third. Next to arrive were Pangolin, Rahepoto, Glenotus. Kawini, Clockwork and Lady Spalpeen. When he. fell Catonian broke a leg and was destroyed. Summer Cup There was a good pool for the Summer Cup, and when operations ceased Pegaway £1,559 held pride of place on the machine, but there was good money for Star Stranger £1,698 and Seatown £I,GS3. The favourite put up a great fight, but was forced to strike bis colours to the little-favoured Royal Boulton who carried £592 and paid a double-figure dividend. • Merry Mint and Panther led past the stands from Lucy Rose, Amor, Royal Boulton (who commenced from the outer), this lot being followed by The Hawk, Tea Time. Star Stranger, Transformer, Jaleux and Yertigern, with Pegaway at the tail of the field. Along the back the order was Merry Mint, I’anther. Amor, Lucy Rose, i Royal Boulton, Seatown, The Hawk, Star Stranger, Transformer, Vertigern i and Jaleux. the latter falling at the | half-mile post. The field bunched • crossing the top, but Merry Mint bad a ' slight advantage as the home bend was negotiated, being closely followed by Lucy Rose, Royal Boulton. Amor. Panther. Transformer. Flying Juliet, Seatown and Star Stranger, with Pegi away showing up on the outer. Ones ; straightened up Royal Boulton dashed j through to the lead and. shaking off a I desperate* challenge by Pegaway, won by a neck, with Amor three parts of a i length away, third. Vertigern was j fourth, succeeded by Star Stranger. The Hawk, Merry Mint. Seatown. Pan- ; ther. Flying Juliet, White Fang and | Transformer.

Criterion Handicap There was another surprise in the Criterion Handicap, when Tenderden. carrying only £459, beat a warm favourite in Awaken £2,892. Biddy’s Boy £1,151 was second choice on the machine. Tenter den. Tremettus, Oil King and Biddy's Boy were the first to become prominent, but with two furlongs covered, Open Cheque took the lead, followed by. Betterment. Tenterden. Hard V ords, Awaken, Biddy’s Boy, Oil King and Brastic. Oil King ran through and was first to turn for home from Hard Words, Tenterden and Open Cheque. Inside the distance Tenterden forged ahead and Awaken put a i s *!' on Z finishing effort, but failed h* half a length to overhaul Tenter-cc-n. Tremettus, who came with a good

rally, being a similar distance away third. Nimble was next to arrive, followed by Oil King, Betterment, Brastic, Hard Words and Biddy’s Boy. Waitemata Handicap Buellona £3,285 was a hot pot for this event and pulled backers through after a desperate tussle with Nassau Lady £516 and Antique £983. Prince of Orange £1,285 was second choice in the betting. Nassau Lady was the early leader, having charge passing the stands from Sea Song, Buellona, Pedestal, Mon Star, Prince of Orange, Antique and Calaris. Sea Song went to the front at the back attended by Pedestal, Nassau Lady, Bay Lass, Prince of Orange and Buellona. The field bunched crossing the top, but Sea Song had a slight call over Nassau Lady as they turned for home, with Buellona, Pedestal, Prince of Orange, Motere and Thurnus handy. There was a great race to the judge, 11. Gray getting the favourite home by a neck from Nassau Lady, with Antique a similar distance away third. Prince of Orange was fourth and then came Motere, Thurnus, Sea Song, Nassock, Pedestal and Bay Lass. Electric Handicap Backers wanted Great Star in the sprint race, and he carried £3,133, second choice falling on Cimabue £1,987, while Knightlike was favoured to the extent of £1,403, and Leitrim carried £619. Tea Time and Town Bird got much the worst of the dispatch, and were hopelessly left. The favourite hopped away with the lead, followed by Cimabue, Knightlike, Lady’s Boy and Vallar. A little further on Polyxena took charge, showing the way to Vallar, Awarere, Great Star, Leitrim, Cimabue and Knightlike. As

the turn was approached Awarere got to the front, and led into the straight from Leitrim, Polynexa, Vallar, Great Star, Knightlike and Cimabue. Inside the distance Knightlike made a determined effort and drew up to Leitrim, and in a punishing finish the former gained the verdict by a head. Two lengths back came Polynexa and next were Cimabue, Awarere, Lady’s Bov, Takutama, Great Star, Tea Time, Vallar and Town Bird.

Plunket Handicap A field of 14 contested the concluding event, and Hyde Park staged a popular return to form. He was fifth favourite with £l.OBl, Goshawk £2,093, Royal Parade £1,529, the Ti Tree—Le Cliouens bracket £1.246, and King Midas £1,173 being better backed. Several horses in the centre of the field appeared to be caught in the tapes at the start, but their progress was not noticeably hampered. Marble King, on the rails, actually being the slowest to move.

Royal Parade, was the smartest to begin, from Goshawk, I-Iyde Park King Midas and Eager 1 lose, but at the end of the first couple of furlongs Hyde Park was the pilot, and lie led past the five from Hager Rose, King Midas, Gemlight. King Emerald, Goshawk and Taneriri. Into the straight Hyde Park was the pilot from King Midas, Gemlight, Eager Rose. Goshawk, Royal Parade and Taneriri all

handy, the bracketed pair. Ti Tree and Le Choucas, being at the tail of the bunch. Hyde Park was called upon to shake off several challenges in the run to the judge, and the last and best effort to get to him was made by Goshawk. who failed by a neck. King Emerald was only half a length away third, half a head in front of Ti Tree. Then came Eager Rose, Royal Parade, Flying Prince, Taneriri and Glenstar.
