TENNIS TITLES
BARTLEET HAS VICTORY IN SINGLES MRS. MELODY’S SUCCESS By defeating M. M. Morrison, of the Eden and Epsom Club, E. L. Bartleet, of Remuera, retained his title as singles champion of Auckland in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship, which was continued on tho Stanley Street courts yesterday under ideal conditions. Tho new women’s singles champion is Mrs. Melody, of Wellington, who defeated Miss Beryl Knight. In the semi-final Miss Knight had achieved a surprise victory over Miss Marjorie Macfarlane, last year’s champion. G. Brown beat E. Tonks in the men’s singles, B grade division. The women’s doubles championship final went to Misses Knight and Whitelaw, who defeated Mesdames Melody and Arneil. HOW BARTLEET WON Skilful tactics and the employment of a wider variety of strokes carried Bartleet to victory in the men’s singles final against M. M. Morrison. The latter took his game quietly and frequently had the champion thinking, but Bartleet’s finesse could not be withstood indefinitely. Though excess of caution on the part of both men retarded play in the first two sets, the match brightened up attractively in the last two, the gallery being given a glimpse of tennis much above the ordinary. Morrison’s service had a tricky first-ball, but taken generally, his opponent was superior in that aspect. Bartleet was confident and after yielding the first set to Morrison, went on to take the succeeding three, the final two of which ran out to vantage sets. Morrison’s tennis was uphill almost the whole distance, and his plucky fight against waning fortunes did not pass unnoticed by the crowd. The score-sheet showed Bartleet 4—6, 6—2, 7—5, 10—8. MRS. MELODY V. MISS KNIGHT Splendid tennis was seen in the final of the women’s singles championship. Miss Knight scared heavily with her powerful back-hand, and was always dangerous at the net with volleying of amazing accuracy. Mrs. Melody demonstrated her noted chop and cut forehand strokes, and played to keep Miss Knight on the back line. The Wellington player was very accurate, and kept a precise length. The first set went to Mrs. Melodj r , the second to Miss Knight, and the final to Mrs. Melod3 r , after a strenuous 10 —8, in which there was hardly a point between the players. In the fifteenth game Mrs. Melody had a match point which Miss Knight snatched from her in returning a lob which dropped on top of the net, and fell over, to give Miss Knight the point. In the eighteenth game another match point awaited Mrs. Melody, who cut a sharp one past Miss Knight, and took the match, 6 —2, 4—6, 10 —8. WOMEN’S DOUBLES FINAL The women’s doubles final produced good tennis, in which the volleying equipment which had served Miss Knight so well in the singles final against Mrs. Melody allowed her at times to dominate the court, her angled placements and severe smashes repeatedly earning snectacular points. Miss KniglU: was ably supported by Miss Nancy Whitelaw, whose clean driving off either hand was invaluable in keeping the ball awav from Mrs. Melody. At times she and Mrs. Arneil exchanged protracted driving duels across court or down the sideline, while Miss Knight and Mrs. Melody each played an onlooker’s role while in wait of a chance to intercept. In the first set Miss Knight and Miss Whitelaw assumed an early lead. The trailing pair squared matters at 3-all, but Miss Knight went ahead on her service, and the local pair won the set at G—4. In the second set their aggressive tactics gave them a clearcut margin. MEN’S DOUBLES SEMI-FINAL The men’s doubles semi-final, in which Nicholson and Hubble were beaten by Johns and Morrison, was full of spectacular rallies, the University pair concentrating on attack, and making great recoveries in chasinglobs to the back line. After being a set down, Nicholson and Hubble recovered to 2 all. Hubble, in the fourth set, was brilliant, his overhead being extraordinarily severe, while Nicholson seconded him with very crisp sharp-angled stop volleys from the net. The final set went to 2 all, but a tightening up by Morrison and Johns saw the opposition pair lose its grip on the game, to lose the set at 3 —6. Details are as follow: A GRADE.
