TO FLAY CANTERBURY
AUCKLAND SHIELD TEAM SELECTED NO CHANGES MADE Tho Auckland Cricket Association's representative selectors, Messrs. N. C. Snedden, E. C. Beale and W. J. Smeeton, announce the selection of the following team to represent the Auckland Province in the Plunket Shield match with Canterbury, commencing at Eden Park on Friday next: A. H. Anthony (Parnell). S. A. R. Badeley (Hamilton). W. L. Elliott (Y.M.C.A.). D. R. Garrard (University). If. D. Gillespie (Eden). A. M. Matheson (University). J. E. Mills (Eden). 11. W. Rowntree (Grafton). G. L. Weir (Eden). A. F. Wensley (Parnell). I‘. E. Whitelaw (Parnell). W. J. Smeeton (University) is 12th D. R. Garrard has been appointed tuptain by the Management Committee of the Auckland Cricket Association, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee. The team is exactly the same in its personnel as the one which gained an overwhelming win over the Otago representatives last week. In view of the one-sidedness of that game the selectors evidently consider that the team has not, as yet, been thoroughly tried out, and therefore they have not considered a change desirable. Nevertheless there is a considerable body of cricket opinion in Auckland which believes that there is room for the introduction of a further element of youth into the Shield team. The claims of A. W. McCoy, the Parnell all-rounder, have been advanced, and certainly on club form this season he has merited consideration. However, further light will be shed on this subject after the Canterbury match, for there is little doubt that the Christchurch men will provide much stronger opposition that did Otago.
