FLOOD AT WESTPORT
MUCH DAMAGE TO STOCK AND PROPERTY RIVER RISES SUDDENLY Press Association WESTPORT, Today. The Karamea River, rising very rapidly, last evening inundated the township here and caused serious damage to property and heavy loss in stock. The road was scoured out in many places and a small bridge was washed away at Arapito. The water is two feet deep in the township and up to ihe doorstep of the post office. Many homes were invaded by the water. Although it has not been definitely established, it is though an earthquake dam has given way. Although heavy rain has been falling it is not sufficient to cause such a flood. An enormous amount of timber was brought down and the water is as thick as pea soup. Conditions are very similar to the disastrous flood at Seddonville. The flood was at its worst at the peak of the tide at eleven o’clock last evening, but the river is now falling. Arapito suffered considerably, much dairy land being badly silted up. Details at present are meagre, but the damage is reported to be very extensive, especially to stock.
