32 DEATHS RECORDED IN EUROPE
SCAFFOLDING COLLAPSES LONDON, Thursday. Fierce gales on the British coast and in south and eastern Europe have wrought havoc with shipping. Already 32 deaths have been recorded, the majority of them in the wreck of the Danish steamer Asland, off Portugal. There were many gallant rescues from distressed vessels at various points ou the British coast.
There is also an unusually long list of Christmas tragedies with more than 30 deaths, mostly due to motoring smashes.
A startling accident occurred at Hove, near Brighton, when 12 persons were injured through the collapse of scaffolding at a church overlooking a football ground. Many people had climbed on to this to get a view of the match. The scaffolding gave way and precipitated the spectators 40ft, amid crashing timbers and masonry.
